Emissions Legal?

I'm swapping my 2.8L V6 to an L98. I plan to run a carb on top (750cfm). Will I be able to transfer the accessory assembly (alternator, smog pump, a/c, etc...) from the V6 to the V8? The other question is, will a smog pump/ cat combo be enough to reduce emissions enough to make the car street legal, or will I need other things, like and EGR in addition?

First read the sticky about V6 to V8 swap in the top section of the forum this is now in (Engine Swap vs. Tech).

There is also an emissions sticky, but basically, a carb on an L98 is not emissions-legal. Whether you can get by with that where you live is a different question (where do you live?).

Re: Emissions Legal?

Yes, we need to know where you live. According to federal emissions laws, you cannot put an older setup on a newer car. So if you car is 88 or newer, you cannot legally put a carb setup on it. And if its an 87 or older car, you would need to put a thirdgen quadrajet on it. Also, the EGR setup is the only thing the computer checks, so you will get an SES light without it.

Re: Emissions Legal?

I'm in NY and the car is a 1988, the engine is 1989. Thanks for the help guys. It looks like I'll have to get my hands on a TPI system and work that up to par. It's a bummer, because I was really looking forward to getting that carb going.
