I have a 5.7 in it right now but it is believed to have over 200,000miles so naturally I'm in the market for a new engine. I found a cheap one that was rebuilt about 3 years ago. never put in a car. It's a 64-77 350 SBC. It will have to be carbed and all but will it even fit? will it mate up with the trans? I'm thinking about doing a 383 with it is that a good idea? Let me know if I'm getting myself into stupid things. thanks =)

 

It will "fit". The issues will be the dip stick being on the driver's side (gets in the way of stock exhaust manifold - if you have headers, not a problem), and 2-piece rear main seal (requires a different flexplate/flywheel).

350's didn't come out until 1968, so the '64 claim is a red flag.

If it's a 4" bore, 383 is no problem.

Most 350 heads were pretty bad until the 3rd gen era. What heads were you planning on using?

 

Well it's a long block so it will use whatever heads are on it now. After the 383 business though I'll probably take the engine out of my car now and put the heads and roller lifters on it. I'll also probably get an LT4 cam.

 

nope the old engine isnt a roller, you would have to get different lifters and cam
