383 build f/i and pass emissions

first post new to thirdgen forums,
finally got myself my dream car, a camaro, specifically a 84 z-28 with a 305 ho motor and i'm tryin to design a motor to go into it as a mixed weekend driver and maybe a few runs at the track just to see what it would do. i like torque more than horsepower so i'm tryin to design a motor around that.
the motor i have planned so far is a
short block from summit http://store.summitracing.com/partde...1&autoview=sku
head/cam kit from summit http://store.summitracing.com/partde...&view=1&N=700+
with fuel injection kit
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
the rest of the parts would be transferred off the 305 if possible. does it look like a good build? i'd like to make it pass emissions if it ever came down to it. As it stands right now emissions isnt a problem but i dont know if it will be in the future so i might as well bite the bullet and do it up front for mpg's. Does that look like a good combo and if so what recommendations would you have for headers?, btw my current motor is carb so no transferring. the drivetrain will be built before the motor is dropped in and i'm going to upgrade the suspension as well.

Welcome to thirdgen.org. Good to see another Colorado member.

The cam in that Trick Flow kit isn't going to be very EFI or emissions friendly.

That's a pretty ambitious project, to be sure.

Welcome to TGO

I'm gonna give you some advice on that build you have selected. overall its not a bad build, but will it pass emissions? its possible but it will be close. And some parts may not work well together.

May i suggest getting a 383 shortblock with flat top pistons and those heads you have in mind. 72cc chambers should give you a street friendly compression. Dome pistons will keep your compression too high even with those 72 cc chambers.

I dont think that block is setup for a hydraulic roller so you will need a whole retrofit setup, or else get a shortblock based on a roller block. If not, you will have to go flat tappet cam which i dont like as much as a roller. rollers are much better cams.

If you do a roller cam setup, then you can look into running the comp cams 280 XFI grind with those trickflows, should pass emissions and make great power all around. More torquey motor would be the 268XFI grind. wide 113 lsa will be computer friendly and emissions friendly.

That TPI setup isnt bad but its quite a pricey setup with that DFI. you could run a factory TPI wiring harness and have someone tune it for you. that way you could keep all the smog legal accessories such as AIR. I'm not sure how strict your emissions laws are.

A good TPI setup would be the FIRST injection system. About same price as aftermarket TPI's with a throttle body for 1000 bucks or so. its the biggest TPI setup available and will be perfect for that 383 and will make gobs of torque. Factory TPI stuff will work with that manifold setup

headers you will want to look into Dyno Don's 1 3/4 inch shorties or Hooker 2055 shorties. They are the only smog legal options

Re: 383 build f/i and pass emissions

thanks for the info, i've been told a roller valvetrain is worth the money in the long run so i'm intrested in it unless i've been mistold. the tpi system, can i buy that aftermarket or look in some jy's for the components? this project will take a few years so money isnt that big of an issue as i'm still single (right now anyways). in colorado i believe the emissions are set by year and vehicle not a standard so it will have to pass same emissions for that vehicle regardless of changes, and last i checked a carbuerated 305 isnt the most emission friendly

Re: 383 build f/i and pass emissions

if that is the case you can get away with some mods Just run a cat and it should be fine

yes i feel roller cams are better than flat tappets for both power production, longevity and driveability.

You can find TPI stuff here on the classifieds as well as junkyards or aftermarket suppliers. If you want TPI and all its emissions controls, the BEST highflowing TPI seems to be the First injection setup.
http://www.firstfuelinjection.com/products.htm

That would run great on a 383. Else get aftermarket TPI stuff like big tube runners/factory plenum portmatched, and a big mouth base from TPIS or Edelbrock

Run any fuel management system you want and can afford. Stock style ecm for a TPI car or DFI management. FIRST injection sells there kit for just under 2000 bucks, not a bad deal with all brand new GM electronics
