Turbocharged 250 inline 6 in a 3rd gen
Turbocharged 250 inline 6 in a 3rd gen
Just thought id share a pic with all yall.My brother has put an inline 250 6 cylinder in a 1991 Camaro and turbocharged it.Here is a pic of it with a used carb for mock up,it has a new holley hp 650 on it now.I'll get more pics asap. The engine is bone stock out of a 1970 chevy truck. It has a new powerglide and will be on the track in about 2 weeks.May not be the fastest but will be fun.It is running about 15 pounds of boost so far.We have another 250 on the stand that will be quite a bit stronger when finished. Some ask why, we say why not!!!!!

It'll make a lot of torque but like you already said, why? They're not a high reving engine. How is the hood clearance?
Lots of inline 6 engines in Comp Eliminator but the custom made performance parts can make the engine worth more than your whole car.

Just something fun to do.The hood closes with about an inch of clearance at the front water neck.Nothing serious, just fun. He is building a 496 powered

If anything I would be worried about blowing something up with 15lbs boost on an old engine, Has It been rebuilt? It looks old. If you make an aluminum heat deflector around the turbo you should be fine.

This is for a trial run only and this motor was rebuilt about a year ago.Another one is on the stand. We have Leo Santucci's book on building 6 cylinder chevys so it will be a blast to do.The next block will be bored .125 and filled with block hardener and will have 327 4" bore pistons, better cam, copper head gaskets and water injection. We are buying up the 250's around here for spares. Like i said ,just a fun thing to do.
----------
Its just the way the picture looks, the turbo is down quite a bit,but we will keep an eye on it.Thanks

Man that is cool!!!!! I like doing different stuff like that it just confuses people, but why didn't you go with the bigger 292ci? after water injection you will be safer and you could turn the boost up if you build your motor well
Remember no matter what people say about it, Just have fun with it!!!!

Awesome swap!
I love it!
Keep up the good work, guys. A few more pics pulled back a little so that we can see more of the engine bay would be great.

Re: Turbocharged 250 inline 6 in a 3rd gen
From the picture it looks like your feeding all the fuel from the carb right through the inlet of the Turbo... is that correct?
Unless that turbo was specificly built to have fuel running through the intake compressor housing it will fail in very short time.
The draw through carb/turbo setups had alot of problems when they back-fired.
If this is somthing your planning on staying with and having good success I'd suggest getting that intake manifold welded with injector bungs and doing a Mega-squirt fuel injection system. You'd be making alot more power and depenablity.
Sorry to say the way it is just won't last long.
You can find a used I6 out of a Newer Trail-blazer and turbocharge that. Much better engine design, already injected and can handle ALOT of power in the stock configureation.
I thought that's what this thread was about. Darn. Lol.

Hi MartinD
You could use the old trams-am turbo set up with the draw threw system on it and that turbo is designed for draw threw so no smoke out of your car, JUST TIRE SMOKE WHEN THE TORQUE KICKS IN

Pull back some more, please.
I would really like to have a picture of the front end with that engine poking out!
How far away are you from a test drive now?

Hopefully, you'll figure it out. I seem to have trouble posting pics as well. There is some trick that I haven't learned yet.
I know some guys post them on photobucket or cardomain and then just post links to the pics.
Have you got her driving down the road yet?

Re: Turbocharged 250 inline 6 in a 3rd gen
I have a 83 camaro v6 that just dumped. I don't want to spend any more on a doomed engine design.
I like the i6 idea a lot.would the 250 bolt to a T5 transmission? Thinking outside the box
