Exactly what do I need for the 350 swap?
I have a '92 Z28, 305 TPI with 700R4.
I'm not a huge gearhead.. yet, I don't have the money to build the 305 like I wanted too, and my dad gave me the greenlight to start 350 hunting. I was gonna do a 383, but I need a few other things on my car so I was thinking what a 350 + a 400 crank would give me? I am gonna keep it FI because I am using this car for work/school. I heard carb reduces driveablity, etc.
Right now, I can think of these parts I will need.
350 engine
ECM of a 350 fbody.
I can't think of anything else, because I heard these swaps were very easy. What am I missing? How much should I be paying for a 350 engine and computer? If I buy a carb'd 350, can I put my TPI system on it? (how easy is that?) Can I use the same wiring harness?
I know I can search, but I want to keep all the answers in one thread.

A 350 + 400 crank = 377 (if you use proper pistons - if you use 350 pistons, you get scrap metal). A 350 bored .030" over + 400 crank = 383 (if you use proper pistons - if you use 350 pistons, you get scrap metal).
The differences, other than the engine itself, between 305 & 350 TPI are injectors, knock sensor, and PROM (not the entire computer). Some '90-'92 305 TPI cars also got the small 2-1/4" exhaust, so if that's what you've got, figure on changing the entire exhaust system, including manifolds, y-pipe, cat, etc., as well.
You can put TPI on an engine that had a carb, but there are details to know, particularly with the heads and cam. The intake manifold mount bolt pattern changed in 1987 with the center two bolts on each side being at 72 degrees instead of 90 degrees like the rest. You need a computer-friendly cam. The rest of the differences are minor details (dip stick location, type of rear main seal, etc.).

Re: Exactly what do I need for the 350 swap?
Ok, well I have 24# injectors from my 305 I can put on the 350. I also have longtube headers and a 3inch exhaust so I think I'm good there.
I'm gonna look for a tpi engine to save time.
What do I need to know about the knock sensor? Also, can I get a 350 tpi prom online? What kind of pistons should I be looking for?

Re: Exactly what do I need for the 350 swap?
Making the TPI work with the 383 is gonna be a little frustrating. And you'll be limited on how big of a cam you can use. Youll leave power on the table either in final stage or the paper stage.
Anyway you'll at least need to get a tune done, so look into how to do that yourself or have soemone do it for you. If you're gonna stick with fuel injection that will be a constant battle until you figure it out.
The other option is throw a carb on it. There are drawbacks to that too and it adds its own complexities and confusions to the project.
The easiest thing to do is just put a 350 in with the crappy stock cam and stock heads and do an L98 swap... but that's a lot of work for 40hp and you still dont hit 250 hp to the wheels.
