first off i have learned a lot about my 85 trans am. but my first question on this forum is since i have a 305 tpi wich was all fun until it threw a rod. drove it maybe 4 times all together it has been sitting for about 2 years its got 98k on it. my question is i was gonna just swap out a 305 but now after reading on here and fbody.com i wanna put a 400 sbc in my t/a so im basically asking what certain vehicles have the 400 in it..and will i need the tranny out of it? and will the tranny fit in the trans am without much work (im Praying). thanks alot every1.. i really want this car to be running this summer again thank you! my names brian by the way

The 400 is an SBC like any other, so whatever bolts to a driver-side-dipstick 2 piece RMS block will bolt to a 400 (except the balancer and flywheel/flexplate).

400s were used in full-sized trucks through 1980, and some full-sized cars through in the early 70s. Almost all of them have been picked out of junkyards by now though, so your chances of finding one are slim.

400s will take the same transmission as any other SBC.

been thinking of dropping a sbc 400 into another camaro i came across w/ a blown 305 HO and making it a drag car. is there any specfic conversion parts need to drop it in or will it fit right in place? also have a Th350 to go along w/ it, will this fit right in place of the 700R4 that is in there already?

this will be my first go round w/ such a swap and want to be prepared for everything.

A TH350 isn't going to have the torque arm mount on the tailshaft housing. You'll need to deal with that somehow.
