The 454 uses solid lifters, so you'll have to adjust your valves, but it also lets you upgrade to nice large cam later.

So where are these pics of this machine?

I am ashamed to show pix of work in progress

The best I have right now is right after the engine was put in. My engine bay is filthy from all the fabrication. I didn't do anything with it because it was going to get beat up during the fabrication any way.

I will get it painted when the engine is pulled for the new engine.

Vintage Air a/c setup though

As you can see, I do not want to throw away all the work and start over with an LS or big block.

No doubt! Looks like a non v-8 and probably non rwd car. That's a lot a friggin work. Anyone the least bit familiar with this kind of project can see that. No shame in a work in progress. Hey aren't they all? In fact, mine is perpetually a work in progress with plateau's that look sort-of finished. Next phase I'm gonna...

Re: Baddest SBC crate motor?

FYI, this is my torque curve from the other thread. Dynapack 3000. There was a glitch on the dyno and it got shut down prematurely. I originally wanted to run up to 5100 RPM. There really was no need to do another pull because the torque curve is going to change again when we do more stuff to it

Thanks for everybody's help. I decided to go with a GM ZZ383 crate motor. It interchanges with all the accessories I have now and should be a direct bolt-in for my Gen0 350 with no mods.

The reason is that I found out anything with more cubic inches than that is going to require an aftermarket block due to cylinder wall thickness when running that large of a bore.

I really don't want to go to an aftermarket block so I guess I will have to live with the 383.

Maybe I'll throw a supercharger on top of that after I live it with it for a while.

Re: Baddest SBC crate motor?

Thats a good motor and has a lot of room to grow. A cam change should give you close to 500hp.

There's no doubt in my mind that GM underrates their crate engines.

My engine is only rated 350 ft-lbs. I got 315 ft-lbs. on the Dynapack. That's only a 10% parasytic loss which is way too low. The engine has no mods. Edelbrock Performer intake, 600 CFM carb, and block hugger headers.

The ZZ383 is rated at 460 ft-lbs. I'm hoping that it will put down way over 400 ft-lbs. at the wheels.

This is the cam it comes with: Camshaft: Hydraulic roller, 222°/230° @ .050", .509"/.528" lift, 112° center lobe

Based on your recommendation I'll see if I can wake up the motor with a new cam.

Re: Baddest SBC crate motor?

Here's a link to a 500hp zz383. Relatively small cam too.

Re: Baddest SBC crate motor?

heres my take,
if you have the money to spend, get a reputable shop to build you a motor. that way if something DOES go wrong, they are only a drive away, also, you will always get a better bang per buck if you have someone build it rather than a crate motor.

that being said, go with an aluminum block 427 small block
