difference between ls1 and 350

difference between ls1 and 350
whats the difference between a ls1 and a 350? isnt a ls1 a 346ci motor? if the 350 is 350ci, then wouldnt it be better to buy a 350 and build off that? sorry if its a noob question.

The LS1 has a number of technological improvements over the generation I small blocks.

Forget about displacement for a second.
There are 3 generations of GM (or should I say Chevy) V8 motors. The first is virtually all motors before 91/92. (That includes 3rd gen f-body motors.) The second generation is from 92/93 - 97/98. That includes LT1 and LT4 motors. Some parts between first gen and second gen motors are compatible. The final generation is 97/98 to the present. That includes LS1, LS4, etc. These motors are of a totally different design. Their parts are not compatible with first generation GM (Chevy) motors.
2nd generation motors are more fuel efficient and generally produce more power than 1st generation motors. 3rd generation motors produce more power than 2nd and 1st generation motors.
Generally, a 350 refers to a 1st gen 350. I think the LS1 is about 350 cubic inches, however it is referred to as an LS1. (It is not referred to as a 350.)
If you are asking which motor is better to build off of.....
A first generation 350 is MUCH easier to install into your 3rd gen f-body than an LS1. However, many people on this board have installed LS1s into their firebirds/camaros. This is an expensive swap. But, LS1s produce more power than 350s.
So, if you are worried about the cost of parts and installation, go with a 350. If price is not a concern, an LS1 will get much more power and much better gas mileage.
