Need Some Advice on New Motor
Hey guys I need some input and advice.
I am considering purchasing a rebuilt 350 for the camaro. The price is right, and looks to be a good rebuild job, the guy is moving and does not want to take the motor with him.
The motor came out of a 84 1 ton pick-up. He had it rebuilt to go back into a 1 ton pick-up.
10:1 Compression, Stock Heads 76cc, "gas saver cam", the guy at the shop that re-built it thought it should be around a 300HP.
My concern is that with all the torque this motor will produce, I know I will have very quick acceleration, but I do not want my engine roaring at 3,500 rpm at highway speeds.
I have the 700r4 4 speed auto tranny.
Rear axle ratio is 3:23.
Will this motor work for me?
Thanks in Advance for your help and input.

Glad to here the engine should work, I think I'm going to take it.
One last question I forgot to ask, with the increase in HP will my tranny and rear axle hold up. The tranny was rebuilt a couple years ago. The axle is all stock.

10:1 compression with 76cc heads would require domed pistons. Not what you typically do for a 1 ton truck. Gas saver cam and 10:1 compression are not a good mix - ping city.
"300 HP" - depends upon how you rate it. A stock 3rd gen L98 will put out 300 gross flywheel HP, since it's rated at 245 net flywheel HP. Without a dyno sheet to back it up, we'd have to assume "300 HP" is gross flywheel, and based on the parts put in it.
That being said, the later TH700R-4's were better built than in the earlier years, '88-up being preferred. You should assume the basic TH700 upgrades, such as shift improver kit (TransGo, not B&M), .5" relief valve, Corvette servo, etc. The Transmission and Drivetrain forum has a lot of information about all of that stuff.
The rear always benefits from upgrades. If nothing else, put an aluminum support cover on it. Again, '84 is of the weaker class, 26 spline axles (vs. 28 in later years), 7.5" ring gear (vs. 7.625" in later years). There's a tech article linked from the thirdgen.org homepage that addresses all of that.
