Considering 6.0 vortec swap
Im considering doing an engine swap this winter in my TA. Ive looked at many 350's and i have access to an 383 stoker, but since i work at a gm dealership i was considering, has anyone ever thought of putting a vortec 6.0 engine out of a 97-99 or newer Chevy 2500 pickup? They have decent hp numbers stock and decent flow. It was just something to consider. Let me know what you all think...

6.0l Vortec from '97-'99? I think you're confused, either about the year or the size.

no im not confused. The 6.0 liter votec came in most 2500, and some 3500 hd chevy pickup trucks. They range in years from what im told and not just in the newer 90's range.

I'm pretty sure 6.0's came out in 99 or 00...It was the Lq4.

either way.. owning one of these in a full size 4x4 2500HD. when i put that pedal to the floor that truck SCOOTS for being stock. but honestly, just looking at it. i dont think it would fit. unless you swaped out the intake. that intake on those things looks very high to me. and you gotta remember, these things are NOT ment for sustained high RMP work. they are more of a low speed high torque motor. but that is an LS style block ( if its the same motor im thinking about. so you could get the mounts and what not fairly easy

I know a couple of guys with those around 03 and 05 and they do have good pulling power. It way be that they are in a big truck but they are slow slow. They thought they were fast cause it said 6.0 but my little car spanked em both.Granted they do weigh close to 5000 lbs.

Re: Considering 6.0 vortec swap
well yea its slow compared to a car. but when we pull our 34 foot 5th wheel camper, it pulls with no problem. BUT, thats also due in part to the 4:10 rear and that 4 speed tranny. idk how it would do in a camaro honestly. deff would light those tires up pretty well, but as far as actual speed.. i would say a tops of 110

Re: Considering 6.0 vortec swap
Theres been quite a few pople that have done the swap. I know sheldon did one in his IROC. Well his is a 5.3l. Same diference.. Have to change the intake, oilpan, I think manifolds and accessorys. With a cam you could see 11-12's in the quarter. With my LS1 (ls6 block)It should run mid 12's to low 13's easy. Mines a cam only with exaust. I'm gonna build a 6.0 stroker in the future.

So, you might not be confused, but what you're being told elsewhere is wrong.

Re: Considering 6.0 vortec swap
the intake won't fit without like 6 inches of cowl, and the manifolds will dump just about straight into the frame rails. but they have great potential, just look at the one car craft did, 480 horses with a mild cam and a carb setup. just need to get a set of headers, or build a set if you have the fab skills

Re: Considering 6.0 vortec swap
From what I've read you need a new intake, accessories, and change the headers. I think there may be some factory ones that work. Aftermarket header prices for those engines are ridiculous. I imagine you could do it all well under 2500. A simple cam change and you have all the power and torque you need. Plus good fuel mileage and good looks. I WISH I would have gone the 6.0 route.

It's an LSx swap with the added details of starting with a truck motor. There's a thread on it in the LSx/LTx subforum https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/ltx-...otor-into.html
