Pullin' 305, Questions
I know the only Stupid Questions, are the questions not asked, Although I'm sure these are stupid questions to be asking you guys...
I'm pulling a 305 from my Bird, and with this being my first pull ever, I've got questions I'm sure somebody here knows the answers to.
Right now I'm looking at The transmission (700r4, I think), How would I pull the engine without pulling the Transmission with it?
On the Exhaust, there's a Pipe that runs from the Cat Converter to the engine compartment that is connected to the back of the engine, beside the AC, and in front of the Firewall... Impossible to get to! How do I get that pipe out of there? I can get pics if needed...
I greatly appreciate Any help, and I'm very proud to be a member of this site.

Re: Pullin' 305, Questions
Don't forget to support the trans. What someone else did before me on the cat pipe thing was to cut the tube, pull the motor then use a piece or rubber tubing with a couple of hose clamps to reattach. But with that said I could get to the clamp once the motor was lifted off the clam shells and pulled forward a bit. I got all my grounds to the back of the heads off that way also.

How many Bellhousing bolts are there? I can see 3 from under it, Are there more?
Thanks for the reminder 'bout supporting it, that'd be a mess!
That sounds like a great idea with the hose thingy, Just need to make sure I don't clamp it shut when I cut it...

The only annoying ones to get to are the 2 at the top, the 2 in each bottom corner, and the 2 on each side about halfway up.

Re: Pullin' 305, Questions
The top two aren't bad if have a real long extention, you can do it with the ratchet back near the tail housing. Also if you lower the trans down some the top bolts are a lot easier. On mine now that all the wireing crap is out of the way thanks to going carb I can reach both the top two bolts and the middle two from the engine compartment. It take some muscle with a wrench to break them loose but I find it easier to do from the top if you can even get near your.
Go real slow as you start lifting it you are bound to miss something that needed to be disconnected. For me it meant the end of a trans line going through my brand new trans cooler. The line was still clamped to the block.

Re: Pullin' 305, Questions
The best advice I could give you is to get 30 bucks, go to sears and buy a swivel/extension set. I don't remember which bolt it was but i remember fishing a series of extensions through the shifter hole. might of been one of the tranny to belhousing bolts (manual)
Re: Pullin' 305, Questions
like dude said get a set of of 3/8 drive and 1/2 inch drive impact swivels from sears they are a good quality for cheap and I would get some impact sockets fo strenght. I did bell housing bolts from underneath and also from the it depends on the person. I took a 351 cleveland out of a torina by myself in 1.5 hours.
its your first pull....get yourself some trays or baggies and organise where all the bolts go write notes on pieces of papers and stick em in the baggies or the bins. I showed that to my brother when we took his motorcycle and engine a apart....he put it back together after with no help and it was his first time
good luck and don't get mad and if something fustrates you take 15 minutes to settle out
have fun

I rememer my first pull. lol but sexual inuendoes aside, it's easier just to drop the trans out then pull the engine than to do both.
