It's a V6 to V8 swap, except the 283, if original heads, won't have accessory bolt holes on the ends, so you'll have to come up with some means other than 3rd gen to mount accessories.

Just to play devils advocate... a set of 305 heads would solve that problem, and would work nicely on the small bore 283

So your saying that all I have to do to make it ft in my car is get me a different set of heads from a 305 and it will work out fine?

Well of course the motor mounts are different, you need a different tranny, depending on what your planning for induction possibly an ECM. I suggest you read the v6-v8 swap it will most likely answer most of your questions. James

Since you have to change so much, why are you even using a 283? It's easier to just drop in a 305 or 350.

No, no, no. Mounts are the same if '58-'67, '57 was the only year for 283 that didn't have the side mounts. Transmission mounts the same, but the starter could be trouble (bolt holes/pad may not support later starter). Induction - it's just a Gen I SBC.

As far as mounting 3rd gen accessories goes, anyway.

Too bad you're not closer, I have a set you could have for the taking.

I have a set of 305 heads I would part with. They are the 193's. Came off of my 92 305. They should just need cleaned up. The car ran ok and did not smoke on start up. If you want to come get them thats fine I live pretty close to you I think.

193's are swirlport heads. Not recommended. 416, 601, or for '87-later intake bolt pattern, 091's are much better.

Although on a 283 it might not matter.

I would think that a ported set of 187's would probably be good for that little motor. it gonna need all the bottom end torque that it can get.

Learn something new everyday. Why I love this site. To clear up any confusion I should have said, the v6 tranny uses a 60* bellhousing apposed to the 90* pattern of the smallblock.
