383 tpi crate motor from precision auto machine

Does anybody know about precision auto machine? They sell a complete crate engine that comes with a first fuel tpi setup. It also comes with ecm with chip calibrated for their engine. 400 hp. I'm considering it as a more direct and simple swap for the tpi 350 in my 91 z28. I want to avoid complicated mixing and matching of parts as i'm new to fbody chevys and this should plug in to existing harness.

someone must have checked these guys out. It looks good to me because it takes most of the guesswork out, or at least it seems to. The power numbers look awesome. Somebody check out their website and tell me what you think.

This price seems fair for a turn key engine with tpi. Still seems a little pricey for me though. The intake color matching option is a nice touch.

8K for 400 fwhp? Hmmm sounds like a bit much IMO.

Jegs:

for about the same price.

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...99120/10002/-1
for 50 less hp but a substantial savings.

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...01331/10002/-1
for 385 hp, again at a substantial savings.

Unless I'm looking at the wrong engine line from precision auto machine, or perhaps the wrong precision auto machine all together. Hell you could get the 427 ls6 for less than that used and in good condition. Maybe I'm just nuts, but it seems that the money would be better spent elsewhere to me.

I think I'd rather do the external work myself & go with THIS from a known/reputable builder.

383 ci, 400 hp and 500 ftlbs of torque, first tpi setup with computer already custom tuned for that particular motor, turn key dynoed....thats where i think it becomes a good deal. I'm trying to keep the swap as simple as i can. the other engines mentioned don't include the first tpi, injectors and related equipment, or the tuned computer. It starts to add up quickly.

Re: 383 tpi crate motor from precision auto machine

I just recently stuck my 383 carbed motor from my 71 ss camaro to my 90 IROC which had a 5.7 tpi engine. Aside from having to purchase a bracket from holley for the exsisting speed and tv cables and a fp reg and a few odds and ends, it was a breeze. BTW my engine was purchased from gmpp as a 383 long block with 425 hp and 460 ft/lbs of torque. So you could go the tpi route if you want. Mine runs so strong its scary.

The motor i'm looking at is 6k not 8k. If these guys are reputable, i may pull the trigger on this one.

Re: 383 tpi crate motor from precision auto machine

i will tell you from personal exerience that tuning a tpi camaro is a royal PITA. i towed mine 8 hours from tampa to north of atlanta because i found someone there to do it. between the tuning and some other odds and ends he did with it, it cost about $900. if you have a computer shipped with the engine already calibrated to it, take that into account as an added expense you would have to incur with buying a carburated engine and puttig tpi on it, which is what i did.

Re: 383 tpi crate motor from precision auto machine

i did a check with the bbb whom they are members of and they have an a+ rating with no complaints. I will definately call them when i get my tax return. There is also a video on youtube of them dynoing the 383 with first tpi and it made 404 hp @4500 and 494 ftlbs @4000. Thats all the power i need and from their listing on ebay the cams are not too radical. Great for the street. Just type first tpi on youtube and watch.

You might want to call the company first for some more info before you make a purchase. Mainly because the engine with claimed 400 hp cost 1500 more than the one you are looking at. I briefly looked through the description of the 6 grand motor and didn't see the hp/tq numbers on it. I didn't really look closely to compare the internals of each but with close to two grand difference I'm thinking the motor you are looking at is not the 400 hp version (though I'm sure it still makes a lot)

Re: 383 tpi crate motor from precision auto machine

i'm definately calling first. From what i can see the difference in the motors are forged pistons and the extra tuning capability for laptops. I don't need all that. But i will call for more info.
