I have an 86 iroc with the carbed 305. in the next few months i am going to hopefully try and swap in a 383 that i have lying in the garage. i have never done this before and i am wondering what all is involved. my dad said since the engine has never been out before it will most likely be a pain in the butt to take out. he has done many swaps but doesnt have the time to help me really. i have a whole new k-member and front chassis for the car. would it be easier to drop the whole front end out of the car with the motor and roll the new one under it with the new engine already bolted to it? need some good tips and ways to start. also how long do you think it will probably take to do the swap if i have everything ready.

Changing the k-member will be more complicated than changing the engine with the factory k-member.

I'd guess it'll be a good couple of weekends at least to do it. Really depends upon what you have for shop/equipment (hoist, lift?), what you run into during the removal, etc.

Are you going to do anything with the exhaust?

 

yes im probably just gonna buy a nice 3 or 3 1/2 inch exhaust system.

 

I have a 10 day break coming up soon. do think it is possible to get it done then, just as long as everything goes well.
