Need help with swap
Need help with swap
I purchased a 1992 camaro 305 tbi motor and I need some help. I am going to put this in my truck, a 1991 4.3l with 700r4. The engine has no flexplate or starter, can I use the ones off my 4.3? I just replaced them a couple months ago.
I was also thinking of putting a b body cam in the engine before I throw it in the truck. How much of a gain will I get if I just put a cam and springs in the motor. Or should I just go with the y/f body version cam?
Thanks.

The 4.3 V6 is external balance. Trucks are usually 168-tooth (14" diameter), which means the flexplate you use would have to be 168-tooth in order to use the truck starter.
The direction of your swap is stretching the bounds of "3rd gen related". What the engine came out of doesn't make it "3rd gen related".

Re: Need help with swap
So it will work, just wont turn the engine over as fast as the f body setup.
As for the cam I forgot to mention that it would be an lt1 cam.
Sorry for stretching the bounds on my topic. I was needing some expert help and The people around here seem to know what they are doing. I will try to stay out of here in the future.
Thanks For the help!

Re: Need help with swap
The folks over at www.gmpartsdirect.com sell this flexplate # 12554824
"V8 & V6 / 90 degree Automatic Transmisison Flexplate
Outside diameter is 14" for years 1986-up. Crank Flange bolt pattern: 3.00"; Converter Bolt Pattern.: 11.50"; starter ring gear teeth: 168. Heavy-duty flexplate with increased thickness for one-piece crank seal. "
And this one #14088765
"V8 & V6 / 90 degree Automatic Transmisison Flexplate
Outside diameter is 12 3/4" for years 1986-up. Crank Flange bolt pattern: 3.00"; Converter Bolt Pattern.: 10.75"; starter ring gear teeth: 153. For one-piece crank seal."
So, its safe to say that the 1986-up sbc v8 is also externally balanced? I'm glad that argument is settled.

No, I screwed up (trusted Summit's description - I know better than that).
The 4.3l V6 is internally balanced. The flexplate & starter should work.
