Could I put a carb on my 3.1?
Would the carb from the 2.8 fit it? What mods would I have to do?
and I know it won't have as much power. We're sticking it in a small pickup.

It'll fit.
A 3rd gen carb'd 2.8 would be computer controlled. I know the '80 X-body carb was not.

You need the 80 Chevy Citation carb and big cap HEI distributor, with the S10 or Camaro carb intake from 82-84.
You will also have to run the aftermarket electric fuel pump for low pressure carb applications (7psi-ish) that most auto parts stores sell off the shelf because the engine doesn't have the mechanical fuel pump provision on the timing cover that the old 2.8 has.
