Does any one know about the L30
Does any one know about the L30 engine from a 1996 - 1998 Chevy truck or van. It is a 305 v8 with vortec heads. I have some questions about swapping it into my camaro.

Re: Does any one know about the L30
Here's the details. I have seen 2 different heads on the L30s. One had the Vortec intake face, but the LB9 ports, not sure what the customer took them off of. The other pair was a marine L30, had the vortec intake face, but LO3 swirl-ports.
L30s make good midrange torque, for a 305, but you'll probably lose to any good running stock 5.7L B2L.
To install it, you need a Vortec-specific intake manifold. You'll also need the '87-up flywheel or flexplate. There may be an issue with the front of the block, passenger side, where the water pump goes. Also, not alot of vortecs came with provisions for a mechanical fuel pump, and there isn't a lobe on the cam.
Your L30 should have a hydraulic roller cam, but you need to determine which intake ports you have before trying to pick any performance cam other than the GM RamJet 350 cam. It has a bit more overlap than the cam you have, but it still idles very smoothly. Good vacuum, excellent torque up to 5000 rpm.
Headers are no trouble, but your passenger-side exhaust manifold won' have a hole in the head for the rear-most bolt.

Also, COMP CAMS offers a bunch of hydraulic roller lobes with 0.474" lift, which is all you should try to use with your heads the way they are.

Re: Does any one know about the L30
Okay, I got a PM from the OP, stating he or she doesn't have the heads, just the L30 short block. The OP asked about using the heads and stuff from the '88 TBI. I'm answering it here rather than by PM so everyone can learn.
Then aside from the possible issue with the holes for the water pump, it's just a straightforward short-block replacement. When you're finished, it'll run exactly the same as your '88 LO3 did before. Well, there is the cam. Install your tiny '88 cam if you want exactly. And no computer issues. The truck cam probably has a bit more lift, but nothing your heads won't accept.
Speaking of heads, the '88 TBI heads are the so-called Swirl Ports, which means they have poor intake flow, and no performance potential. This is the perfect opportunity to upgrade. If you simply use TPI 305 heads, and your '88's original cam, the computer should accept that with no reprogramming, and you can start with the bolt-ons, then intake and exhaust, then a cam. Almost any cam upgrade will want some reprogramming.
