Engine swap Motor Mounts

Hey,
My dad an I have made tremendous progress on getting a very healthy 350 under the hood, but we are puzzled on what part of the motor mounts need changed. I think i have read that the chassis side must be changed, but i am not totally sure. We have the motor side of the mounts, would these need to be changed as well?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks

Re: Engine swap Motor Mounts

You will need V8 engine halves, called clamshells, and V8 frame halves. You cannot use any part of the V6 mounting. This is easiest with the engine nowhere near the car, and easier yet if you remove the front suspension's lower control arms. The frame halves, when installed properly, will each have a forward corner, I believe it is the lower/inner, hanging off the frame. The correct holes are already there in the frame. If the engine was balanced, and if you want burnouts rather than best ride quality, and if you believe in LocTite, then you could order Moroso's solid mounts. You'll need part numbers 62510 and 62610. Another option is Energy Suspension's poly mounts, but you'll still need to obtain the stock GM clamshells and frame halves.

There are pictures of the chassis side in the V6 to V8 swap sticky.

Re: Engine swap Motor Mounts

I just did mine yesterday,
It will be SOOOO worth your while to take everyones advice and drop your lower control arms out of the way. Since your doing a V6 to V8 swap, you should be changing springs anyways, which means this is not a big deal. I dont see how anyone has swapped mounts with the springs or a control arm in the way, all I know is Im happy they were gone.

Re: Engine swap Motor Mounts

I've swapped both an '84 and an '85 Camaro from v6 to V8. Neither time did I replace the front springs. It truly isn't necessary. The springs will settle about half an inch within the first 2 weeks, especially if you're driving it. If it's not road worthy yet, it'll settle less at first and the rest of the way after some road time. After that, you're good to cut the coils if you want to lower it that way. I cut the '85 by one coil on each side, then on the '84 went 1/2 a coil.

Re: Engine swap Motor Mounts

yeah, Ive heard both sides-some say you have to swap springs, some say you dont, I say its up to you-I chose to swap mine b/c my v6 was pretty hammered on in general, and I figured it would make my motor mount swap easier with everything out of the way. Ive also heard some year V6 cars had V8 springs from the factory, do you know anything about this, or is it just a rumor?

Re: Engine swap Motor Mounts

Trick question. Springs aren't rated by engine, they're rated in pounds per inch. Most of the third gens came with a higher-rate spring than most of the older V8 Novas. But the distance from the spring to the balljoint, and the design of the spindle, and the width and offset of the wheel, and the width of the tire, all affect what is called the wheel rate. This is why coilovers are so great for our cars. You get a higher wheel rate, for performance, with a lower spring rate, for good ride. It's about leverage.
