Re: 305 to sbc 400

The 400 is notorious for running hot. theres not much material between the cylinder bores. Also are they 400 heads on it? I had the same problem with a 400 and finally figured out that someone had put 350 heads on it. I corrected it by pulling the heads off and taking them to a machine shop, and getting the 400 steam holes drilled in them and that fixed the problem. If you have 400 heads try useing dual fans.

Steam holes should fix any heat related issues with a 400, assuming you have a decent cooling system (this doesn't take much).

Also, what thermostat is in that?

its international race of champions - or iroc - not iroq as in iraq - a middle eastern country.

the guy i bought the engine from said it didnt run hot but he could be pulling bs me! it also runs rough, i put the original tpi on it could that be a problem because the computer thinks its a 305 and not a 400 so its possibly running to lean?

Re: 305 to sbc 400

If it has the the 305 knock sensor and knock module on it it could will adjust your timing incorrectly and that could result in stalling and running rough at idle, and even overheating. Are the heads center bolt valve covers? If so then there not 400 heads and they probably dont have steam holes in them. Cause a tpi intake wont bolt to a 400 head without drilling the middle holes out so they can bolt to the head.
