will your vehicle be able to pass inspection if you dont have a computer?
I want to swap to a carbed 350 and right now i have a 305 TBI. After dropping in the carbed motor i plan on taking out the computer.

 

I am pretty sure if they do a visual inspection they will fail you because you replaced fuel injection with carburetor. If they don't as long as your car is in good condition and the carb is tuned right you should be fine. I think your speedometer runs through the computer tho so you might loose that. If I am thinking about the right state doesn't Texas have the tester actualy drive your car to make sure its safe?

 

no they dont visually look under the hood, but they do drive it like 10 feet into the inspection garage. Im worried about it passing emissions. Do they hook up the emissions tester to the computer when testing emissions?

 

Only for OBD II ('96-later).

Passing the sniffer would be a challenge (and have the car drive half-way decent with the same tune).

 

If your car originally had a throttle body fuel injection system on it, you can't put a carb on it. All you need to convert to a 350 is a chip and two new fuel injectors from any car/truck that had a TBI 350. If you have a good working smog pump and CAT you might pass the sniffer. But externally they are identical.

 

Physically it is very easily done with a carb, vacuum advance dizzy, and either an intake or an adapter; legally it might be an issue.

But then again, Kalifornia has some strange rules when it comes to that.

Going from FI to a carb isn't really an emissions issue as long as the rest of the emissions equipment is on the car and functioning, smog pump if it has one, catalytic converter, purge filter etc etc, but that is controlled by the computer as well.

 

Yeah. The conversion itself is actually very simple. You gotta look into your local smog regulations though. In commiefornia over here you cannot change ANYthing on a driveline that doesn't have a california air reserve board approval number on it. And you can only put carbs on cars that already had carbs on them.

I'm lucky in that I'm military so I can register my car in Mississippi where there is no smog standard at all. Those C.A.R.B boys would **** a brick if they saw this carbureted 1978 454 I'm putting in mine.

I have a friend from Texas who says the regulations are the same as in California but it depends on your county. If regulations are too restrictive in your county start asking relatives or friends in other counties about their smog rules. You can always just get a PO Box as your new residential address on your title.
