90 Camaro tbi build?? Input please!

I have a 1990 Camaro Rs it has 3.73 posi rear end and and high performance ignition thats all thats done to it but im working on changing this. I am swapping my stock low output heads for high output heads off of an 87 iroc LB9 with 60,000 miles on them.
I will also be putting a new cam in it here are the specs
ADV. Duration (INT/EXH): 288 / 288
Duration @ .050" (INT/EXH): 214 / 214
Valve Lift (INT/EXH): .443 / .443
Lobe Centerline: 112
Power Range: 1700-5200

And lastly i will be putting on headers and y pipe

I would like to paint the heads and intake red does anyone know of a high heat red paint with a gloss and also whats your input on this idea,

Please if anyone has any suggestions on what to do or any tips please let me know thanks and please give me your opinion on what i am doing here

Dupli-color has a line of engine paint that will work nicely for you.

Don't know much about those heads, but that cam should work well with a stock converter and 3.73s.

What you want to use is a paint called VHT, it is a branch of duplicolor. It's the best, and on heads and intake you might consider baking them in the oven for 20 minutes after you apply it, for headers, VHT makes some paint for that as well.

Good luck, also We Want Pics!, DacMan

The two tone look is nice, with a painted block and bare heads, especially if they're aluminum heads, even clean cast iron heads setting off a red block would look cooler than both colored heads and block, in my opinion.

i think you should consider not using shorty headers and go for longtubes, they are hard/expensive to get a normalish exhaust on though, but much more efficient than shorties. it would be a good idea to port theheads befor you slap them on also

Re: 90 Camaro tbi build?? Input please!

i looked at the 87 lb9 and it has the compression ratio as your rs, and not much more horsepower, i would recommend gettting a better set of heads to use, i dont really know what would be better other than getting a set of vortecs off a newer motor, but then you need a new intake manifold... thats what i would do anyway, probably get me a holley 650 for itinstead of the tbi too but to each his own- depends on how far you want to go with it

....i would also consider swapping out the 305 for a 350 block but thats a lot of work

Check those specs. The advertised duration doesn't sound right.

I hope you're planning on new valve springs for the heads. The stock LB9 springs are inadequate.

The LB9 heads are fine. They'd be better with 1.94" intake valves installed and a little bowl clean up.

I plan on keeping the same springs

If you dont mind me asking what is your source of this information beacause my friend did this same thing to his stock LB9 heads and put this cam in it and his engine has ran fine since then

I may not be an engine guru...
But IMHO, vortec heads with the GMPP vortec TBI intake would probably be a nice combo.
you could most likely get the heads of a truck in the junkyard, try looking for a truck that got wrecked in the back, no body damage means higher chance of bad engine parts.
Not 100% sure what the slightly larger combustion chamber size would do to your compression raito, but I don't think it would change it dramatically.
My $.02

I can't seem to find a cam with ADV. Dur. of 288/288 with a valve lift that low. Not saying it's not out there, just saying I can't find it. As for what five7 is saying, you most likely will experience spring bind at the higher rpm's with that cam stock spring combo. Upgrade the springs in those heads.

"Spring bind", more commonly referred to as "coil bind", is when the spring is compressed to the point the coils hit each other.

I'd be more worried about valve float - the springs not being able to close the valves at higher RPMs. Stock springs are only good for about 5200 RPMs when new, and they get weak over time.

Ok, im going to change the springs and i checked the cam specs heres what it says:

Performance hydraulic flat tappet camshaft and lifter kit for Chevrolet small block 283-305-327-350-400. P/N Camshaft 22213; Lifter B-0817. Kit includes Melling M-Select camshaft and lifters. Melling describes this cam as a Class II with fair idle and good low to mid-rande torque. Cam specs are as follows:

ADV. Duration (INT/EXH): 288 / 288
Duration @ .050" (INT/EXH): 214 / 214
Valve Lift (INT/EXH): .443 / .443
Lobe Centerline: 112
Power Range: 1700-5200
