Putting a LS1 into 3rd gen?
Putting a LS1 into 3rd gen?
Has anybody taken a LS1 out of a new car(like a new vette) and put it into a 3rd gen car? I've got a 92 formula w/350. Are the motor mounts the same? The big question is the computer and wiring. I'll probably swap the six speed in with it at the same time. It will take a lot of money and hard work but I think it's worth it. If I keep the engine stock it should get better gas mileage and have more horsepower than the TPI. Thanks for any help.

If you would put in an LS1 you need to use it's trans. The input shafts are shorter on the trans used for LS1s. Another problem is you need to make a custom motor mounting "base" made as the LS1 does not use SBC mounts. Also IMO the only real advantage you'd have over a SBC would be the fact that the LS1 is an all aluminum block. Probably a good 70lbs lighter in the front-end then. But don't start quoting me here, this isn't my department.

Other advantages: SFI, 1 coil per cylinder, you can juice it with no modifications to the fuel system (the MAF will adjust that extremely), there's still lots of goodies for LS1s, more modern technology, you can get into 11's on just the motor alone (with a cam), it looks cool as hell.
I will definitely do it if the opportunity presents itself again. (I couldn't this last time because I didn't have the $3000

I may have access to a 99LS1 out of a vette for a very good price and I'm curious just how much these motors are worth used. 12k miles
Was replaced with crate motor, so everything that comes on one is on this one

Well, you might want to find out why it was replaced with a crate motor, because a friend of mine works for chevy and he has seen about 10 vette's come in with bent valves...apparently at real high rpm's (like missing a shift with your foot on the floor)there is a piston to valve clearance problem.....so find out if that's why that LS1 came out of the car...just a simple warning so you don't get screwed on a **** motor.

Get Blown, yeah, you're right, I did mean to say pushrods, and in fact, yes it is the t56 boys that can't really shift worth a crap that have that happen to them.

Usually the missed shift on a t56 happens going from 2nd gear to 3rd with the pedal floored, and the shifter gets slammed into 1st. That mechanically over-revs the engine and bends the push rods and worse.
Of course some of it's people that can't shift, however the number and popularity of aftermarket shifters, must mean the OEM shifter isn't all that great in most people eyes.
It's kinda funny, GM makes those trannys skip shift from 1st to 4th to lower emmissions and save gas, when they should have designed skip shift to prevent the fatal shift from 2nd to 1st at WOT. It's like they got it backwards!

I think you are going to have to make a custom throttle cable bracket because I think that the vettes use throttle that is controlled by the computer, not a cable. If you got an ls1 out of an fbody it would have a throttle bracket. It would be really sweet to see a thirdgen with an ls1. I heard that the ls1 motor burns oil pretty bad when it is breaking in. After it gets over 5000 miles it usually goes away. Also you would need to find a tranny. Because it would be near impossible to put a c5 vette six-speed in your car.

Wow - whoever misses a shift like that in a vette has to be REALLY inept at shifting!! My shifter is relatively difficult to get into 1st from anywhere so that means they had to be really trying if they hit 1st. The 3 to 4 shifts on these cars is so perfect and smooth that I can't for the life of me figure out how someone could grab 2nd unless they are so excited that they just yank the shifter back to the left - it really is hard to screw up since 3 and 4 are in a straight line. Call it a guess but I'd say 70% of the people that makes those mistakes and bend the pushrods are either joyriding the car or just don't know how to drive stick.
