1991 RS V6

i saw a nice add in the paper the other day for a 91 RS that has front end damage and a V6 for 1500$. i looked at it, its nice. i'll fix the damage, but the only worry i have is that it is a 3.1L V6. i cant live with that! i need a v8.

who here has swapped out a V6 for a V8? i want either a 350 or 383. i was thinking either a crate motor or go to a junk yard and totally rebuild a motor with a rebuilt kit and a lot of speed parts.

another thing is that im not loaded with cash, ill spend a good amount of money, but i dont want to spend it on "un-needed things" in other words, i want to have the engine built up and running before i start buying dress-up items.

its a toss up between a junkyard rebuild and a crate motor. which one!?

opinions/help please!

Originally my car was a 2.8, then I had a 3.1 "built", then threw in a junkyard L-69, and finally (I grew a brain) and threw in a Goodwrench crate 350, I'll tell you right now, a FACTORY crate motor is THE ONLY way to go for a daily driver.

Email me with the specifics (carb, TPI, TBI, A/C, etc.) and I'll try to help you out..

If I knew then what I know now I would have saved myself about $3,000.

Good luck,

John

go with the crate motor like 812 said, you have a warrenty and you know what youre getting. If youre smart about it you wont spend more than 3000 on the engine and proabaly end up spending another 1000 on everything else associated with the engine,(i.e. headers and a carb and a fuel FPR.) you get the idea

Swapping the 6 for an 8 was easy. You need a set of V8 mounts. You will also need to unbolt the motor mounts from the crossmember and move them to the other set of holes. The nuts are a bit hard to get to, but you can do it. I also have to unbolt the brake line crossing the crossmember and move it a bit. Again, nothing major. Since my 6 was fuel injected, I put a regulator on my stock fuel lines and lowered the pressure down to 6 psi. I also used the stock return line. My 350 is pretty stout and fuel starving is not a problem. Make sure you run a Camaro oil pan, or a Y-pipe will not work. I also had to replace the radiator, since the 6 rad did not cut it.

im going to get a gm goodwrench 350 stock crate motor and build from there. ill have the motor settup with a 3.75 stroke crank, world products heads, a new cam, 30 over bore, (im going to sell the crank and pistons and rods from the motor to a friend of mine) steel rods, forged or hyperutectic pistons, but i havent decided on an intake system. (what kind of power can i pull out of this motor, and what settup do you recammend?)

it would be easy to slap on a carb, but i personally dont want that. im most likely going to get the edelbrock pro-flo fuel injection kit for the motor.

any comments on fuel injection systems needed, thanks a lot
