What is the differance between a 302, 305 and 307

This questions been bugging me for a while. is the buick 307 blocks the same as the chevy 305s with different cc heads? are they interchangable...i.e. do the engine mounts set in the same place and are the bellhousing bolt patterns similar.
While we are on the topic could anyone tell me if their is any actual size differance externally in a 305/327 block a 350/383 block and a 400 block or do they all have a similar exterior size and bellhousing pattern. My final question is what engines will bolt up to a stock t-5 or 700R bellhousing. Sorry if this makes no sense, it is really late and this question was really bugging me.

Buick never built a 307. Oldsmobile and Chevrolet did. The 302, 305, and 307 Chevy motor are basically the same externally, with the major difference being the late (80-98) 305 having the dipstick on the passenger side. The 302 was a hybrid built for Trans-Am racing in the 60's. It had the 350's 4.00" bore and the 283's 3.00" stroke crank. The 307 was supposed to be an economy/ emissions motor. It had the 327's 3.25" stroke crank, and the 283's 3.875" bore. The 305 was Chevy's final answer with the 350's 3.48" stroke and a new bore of 3.75". All Chevy V'8 use the same bellhousing pattern, which is unique. Buick, Olds, Pontiac, and Cadillac use their own (stronger) bellhousing pattern Hope this helps.

Like "ProblemChild" said all small-block chevy v-8's are the same..

As far as your trans Q. It depends on the type of 700R4 you have, there's one for the V8's, and 90 degree V-6's(as far as bolt patterns go they are the same, but the V-8 is a little beefier) and then there's one for the 60 degree V-6's....
I'm not sure as to the t-5's but if i'm not mistaken all can be bolted up if you change the bellhousing (other then of course the V-8's being stronger)....

Car: 82 Berlinetta/57 Bel Air
Engine: L92/LQ4 (both w/4" stroke)
Transmission: 4L80E/4L80E
Axle/Gears: 12B-3.73/9"-3.89
Some other details:

The 302 was made from '67-69 (model years). In '67, it had a small journal crank, the same as 283's had for the previous 10 years. In '68 & '69, it had a large journal crank, as did the 327 and 350.

In '87, 305's starting using the one-piece rear main seal crank, which requires the use of a different flex plate than the earlier years.

A 400 block is the same as other SBC's with respect to bolt-ons, but the casting itself is quite different. However, that doesn't affect what tranny will bolt to it, or engine mount locations. If you have a SBC bellhousing, a 262, 265, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 383 (not a production engine), or 400 will bolt to it.

Oh, in case there is any doubt, the 307 Olds and 350 Buick engines are completely different than the Chevy versions.
