350 or 400, from a 3.1
What is the easiest, quickest, most inexpensive swap?
Crate 350, 383, or 400?
How can the t-5 be made to handle the torque, and how long could I run the t-5 with it.
As far as the computer and FI system, which engine will be easier to outfit.
Thanks.

The 350 is the cheapest and easiest to do for sure. I think there is a kit you can buy to make a T-5 stronger, but I have no idea who makes it or what it costs.

Externally, all those blocks are the same. Thus they have (bar minor differences) the same holes for mounting heads, manifolds, accessories, etc. A 350 will be the cheapest--they're everywhere. You can use the stock TPI equipment on any of those blocks (w/ pre-88 TPI base); but 350 will probably be cheaper because you'd want to upgrade to higher performance parts in order to get the most TQ 'n HP from the 383 or 400.
Also, it probably wouldn't be worth upgrading the T-5. It would probably cost as much as installing a T56

350 eh?
Thats what I figured...
What do you mean about the pre-88 TPI base.
What are the differences in pre-88 and post?
Ok, 350 blocks...
L98 the newest(highest performing..) one? (ls-1 and lt-1 aren't 350's...)
Thanks so far,
Daniel

the LT1 and LS1s are a whole new ball game....if your gonna bring them into the picture then the 350 is not easy LOL...a l98 is easy...the others(lt1 ls1) are a lot harder to swap...and more $$$. i beleive the TPI setup changed from (maf to speed density) or the other way around.

Believe me, The lt-1 and Ls-1 are not in the picture!
Why is this true? Why wouldnt 88+ work?
You say that its Speed Density vs MAF. Was TPI changed in these years? Or is it just sensors....(& computer stuff)
BTW What year was the L98 first introduced into the camaro line?

1987 was the first year the L98 was used. That year a roller cam was introduced and the two center bolt holes of the 6 intake manifold holes on each side were changed to a different angle. TPI setups must be matched to the correct heads to do it correctly. Guys have drilled out the holes to make things mate up but I personnaly don't like doing things that way. In 1986 the blocks were one piece rear main seals but the cam was a much milder non-roller hydraulic. I believe it was 1990 and 91 when Speed density systems were put on our cars. The VATS (vehicle anti-theft systems) were introduced as well. Tricky huh? Try to get the hyd. roller vintage of late model block but stick with the L98. Your swap will be easier but not without a lot of conversion work on the harness etc. Good luck. I'm right in the middle of a conversion of my 85 sport coupe now.

I understand about not liking to do things that way... I want to get things that are meant for each other....
Aftermarket heads for the L98.. They are year specific? If I ordered heads, it wouldnt just be for any L98.. to have the tpi base mount up correctly, the heads would have to be matched to the correct year...
What are the differences (if any) between the TPI setups besides the bolt pattern?
So 90-92 L98's were a hydraulic roller cam setup? One piece main seal? Is this correct?
Just curious, how much HP were the stock Z's produced with?
Thanks so far!
