Which crate engine???
Which crate engine???
Im looking to upgrade my 91RS to a 350. I live in cali so i need something that I can pass emissions with. I have TBI right now, and do to emissions cant switch to carb, and due to the fact of how much work it is to switch to TPI i think ill just be sticking with the TBI. Im wondering which crate engine i could hook up a TBI to, be emissions legal and still create a lot of power. With exhaust and minimal mods id like to be making around 350 horses. Also what are the prices like on the engines, and hooking up the TBI setup to it? Thanks guys.

I'm in the same boat. Except I'm on the east coast. TBI is cheaper in a few respects and I like the price of the injectors a lot more than TPI :-).
If you could get away from visual I'd say install the 330hp 350HO. The problem with that motor is the fact that it doesn't have EGR passage (vortec heads). The zz4 is the 355hp engine but the heads don't have EGR either. The best bet to make made hp with no budget and still pass the tests would be a built up 383/355 with AFR 190cc heads and a dual plane manifold with a 700-750 cfm holley vac. adv. w/electric choke. I know I'll be using my stock TBI stuff to pass inspection but then I'm probably going to end up swapping on a 750 carb for the track. I'm thinking of just getting the vortec headed engine and just spending the energy finding a guy to overlook the no EGR. I'll be leaving the AIR and CAT so I shouldn't fail the sniffer. Just visual which sucks to the nth degree. I hope now that Bush is president he'll force everybody to use CATs but let them do what ever they want too their cars. Hope this helps.

As crate motors go, the ZZ4 and the Vortec would be a great choice but you got the emissions/egr/visual inspection issues. You can make the vortec work with EGR but you have to do some external plumbing and I don't know if that will pass inspection.
The easiest and least expensive choice is the LO5 Crate engine (91/93 caprice but you won't get to 300 hp with that set up, at least I haven't heard af anyone doing it.
You could also just get the short block and
bolt on some world products or good GM heads that are designed for EGR , but the cost goes up. Its a tough choice and takes some thought about the trade offs. I still haven't finalized what I am going to do either. Check out the archives, there is a lot of stuff on this on the various boards.......bob
