What is the most hp you have ever seen in a worked 305??
I was just curious,I have heard 325hp in a magazine once!!

saw a fellow named Wells a few years back must of been making 1200 or so out of a 305. he ran the supercharged outlaw circut around here. he was points leader in 86 or 87. ran a front (i think) engine dragster in the 7.5 et range. i'm sure it didn't have any gm parts in it and i'd guess it was a sleeved block. they always made a big point to say he was running a 305 and not a 350.

Engine: 350 TPI
Transmission: 700 R4
Axle/Gears: 3.73 Posi
About 365 honest horsepower with ported heads and a solid roller cam.
There are only 2 problems with a 305, and they are both MAJOR.
1-SMALL BORE - Air flow is everything and the small bore limits the valve size to 1.94 MAX on the intakes. The small bore also shrouds the valve and blocks airflow when it it open. No problem at low RPM where torque is mad; BAD problem at high RPM where horsepower is made.
2-LONG STROKE - limits RPMs because of decreased volumetric efficiency above 4500. Sure, it will rev past 5k, but the cylinder is barely 3/4 full at this point and even though it is revving, it is not making any horsepower.
The guy spent a ton of $$$ on the motor & he could've built a killer 383 for the same dough.
