The BBC is in!

Finally! It's been a long weekend and most of it was spent getting the headers on.

The engine is in. It runs. The cam has been broke in and the car moves.

Still needs to be done:

Install inner valve springs. Going to be real fun getting the back 2 spark plugs out on the drivers side to insert an air line. I installed the plugs from under the car. There's less access than the BBC in my truck. I suppose if the brake booster was off there would be more room. Hmmm. Next thing on my list of things to do.
The carb isn't adjusted yet. It idles at 1200 and the mixture screws haven't been touched since the carb was on the 383.
I need to install some collector tailpipes so that I can install crankcase vents in them.

As nice as it is having a BBC in a third gen, I wouldn't recommend the swap to anyone who hasn't done anything like this before. This isn't an easy swap and there's a lot of stuff removed from my engine compartment. The biggest headache is the headers. Plan on a full weekend to get them in if you don't have access to good shop tools. I'm lucky and have access to a plasma cutter, mig welder and torches at work. Having the car up on a hoist would make the jog go easier also. I only had jack stands. I think from the time I pushed the car into the shop to when I drove it out, the installation took about 18 hours. At least 9 of those was getting the headers in

Well it's in. Now I need to get the rest of the car ready for the start of the race season in 3 months. The time will get here quickly if I don't do anything.

AWESOME.....your car rocks.

Mine's almost done. I spent this weekend stuffing the 454 in and hooking up the majority of things. This week I will be picking up a few odds and ends and making a few brackets. The acid test will be next Sat. when I fire it up.

you can check my car out under "BSR Members" at www.bsronline.net/

Good to hear...in no time you'll be doing this:

This back-halved 84 Z has a 509 and has run a 9.1 second quarter as of late last year....the new owner is still getting the hang of it.

Stephen,
Are the motor mount brackets which bolt to the side of the block the same on a big block
and a small block? Do you use the short or
the tall ones? I have seen this asked on several message boards, and everybody has
different responses.

Hey that almost looks like my car except I don't have headlights and mine isn't tubbed. Maybe in a few years I'll back half the car. After dropping in the big block, that tubular front crossmember sure looks like a good idea also.

As my web page says "No it's not street legal" It would be cheaper to buy another car than to make this one street legal again. It's going to end it's life as a race car.

9.1 with a 509. Any nitrous? If not then that's pretty good for just the engine. I'm guessing about 800hp to run low 9's depending on the weight of the car.

Motor mounts. I originally had the GM clam shell mounts. I don't know what year the mounts were from. I think they were truck mounts. I used Moroso solid mounts upper and lower for third gens. They work will all big and small blocks.

Moroso #62510 is the upper mount
Moroso #62610 is the lower mount

Nordbert...I'm firing up my 454 tomorrow night for the first time. Unlike Stephen's car, mine WILL be street driven. As for motor mounts, I just used the ones from my 305. Still has the heater and everything. P/s isn't hooked up yet, but I don't need it to break the engine in. I think I saved myself some major headaches by not using headers. I would have loved to have used the Hookers, but the cost after the engine, radiator and hood, was a little to pricey for me right now. I'm just using truck manifolds that have been treated to a thorough port job. I don't want to spend anymore money until I know this thing is going to run properly, know what I mean?

Hey don't laugh. After many hours of fighting and fabricating, I was almost finished installing the headers when I was starting to think that cast iron manifolds would have been a better choice!

For a street driven car it probably would be a better, easier and cheaper choice. The Hooker headers are nice but have patience and time to get them installed.

Crazy: After reading your sig I guess I can say my engine is an estimated 530-550 HP. I already had a 450+hp 383 and it wasn't enough.

I;ll be checking your page out. Hopefully you put some pics of the headers so I know what I'm in for in the future. The biggest reason I didn't put hookers on was the fact that I did this at home with no air tools or any type of welding set-up. I work at a Ford dealership, and they kinda get sick of seeing my "POS" in there all the time. I'm going to take it down my backlane to Minute Muffler to get them to weld the manifolds to my y-pipe. My work is about a 15 min drive away, so considering it has an open exhaust, no hood, is uninsured (parked for the winter, I do have storage insurance), and the roads are iced over, I don't think I want to take the risk.I know my exhaust is a MAJOR restriction right now, but once it's mobile, and as time and money allow, I'll slowly start improving things.

Boy are my neighbours going to love me tomorrow night! it's going to be loud!
