Rebuild the Heads or Buy New?
Hey There,
I'm rebuilding my first engine. I have a 5.7L TPI setup, all original (186,000 Kilometers, not miles), and tiring fast.
I am trying to find data on the stock heads but cant find any, and it doesn't help that I know absolutely nothing about heads, just sort of learning as I go
Does anyone have data for an 87 350 head? Also, would it be a good decision to rebuild them, or would buying a newer better set work a lot better?
Whats your opinion?

I forgot to mention one thing. I don't have any smog regulations (it's over 20 years old), just in case that is a factor.

Unless you do other upgrades such a a Holley Stealth Ram, cam, and headers, different heads wouldn't have a significant effect. It could be argued that Vortec heads would be an upgrade by themselves, but they require a $400 Votec-specific base (and the other upgrades - a Vortec Stealth Ram is also available).

Re: Rebuild the Heads or Buy New?
I'm replacing the cam, heads, intake (EFI to Carb), pretty much everything.
I was looking at heads that are 195cc intake, 65cc combustion, 64cc exhaust.
I know the brand new heads would definitely flow better than the stock ones, but if I can machine the stock heads to flow close to the newer heads then I may save some money there and keep the stocks.
I just cant find any specs anywhere on my intake, combustion, or exhaust volumes. I checked the site and exhausted my efforts with Google.
I have a small block Chevy rebuilding book and the Haines manual and they have no info.
The only stock thing staying is the block, and the heads depending on the info I can hopefully get.

pull the casting number off the heads and at least post it...
that will get you started on what you've got

Stock 083 heads have 165cc intake and 65cc exhaust ports, and 64cc combustion chambers.
Now, what cam, what intake, what carb - what are you planning on doing with this car when you get done?
