305 to 400
whats up?
To answer the question/no. The starter is different, flywheel (400 is larger) If u still have the stock exhaust on your car. the 305 has 3 exhaust bolt holes on the ends of the head & the stock type 400 head has just 2 bolt holes on the end. so the stock exhaust manifolds wont work. The oil dipstick is on the pass side on the 305, but its on the drivers side with the 400. The oil pan that usually comes with a 400 does not allow enough clearance for the stock or say edlelbrock T.E.S exhaust to pass under the pan with out hitting it! & If U have a TPI car the solid lifter cam just may give your knock sensor a false reading of knock from the valve train noise.
just my knowledge from swapping a 400 into my 83 camaro back in 92
with a carb setup.

Tra/maro, I believe you've confused this post with another 400 question. Scott didn't say anything about a solid lifter cam.
Scott, what type of 305 do you have: carb, TBI, or TPI? In any case, you should be putting headers and good exhaust back to the bumper to help that poor 400 breathe - the 305 parts just won't cut it.
Other than the items Tra/maro mentioned, everything else will bolt up.
Oh, what heads are you using? '87 was the transition year from same angle intake bolts to the center two on each side being at a different angle. If you're using the '87 intake, be sure your heads are '87-up, or elongate the intake holes to match up with '86-earlier heads.
