How high should the car be raised? How to undo trans?
Hi guys, how high should a Camaro be raised for an engine swap? I'd rather it be done without lifting it in the air- is that possible?
Also, how would we unbolt the trans from the motor? I was going to pull them both as one unit, but was told that would bring more headache. When I did my trans swap, I had to pull the crossmember, tilt the engine back, etc... can the trans be unbolted without removing the crossmember?

If your not removing the trans from the car it's pretty easy and you can leave the car without lifting it.
You just need to unbolt the bolts from the trans housing to motor block, and the 3 converter to flexplate bolts. Juststick a big screwdriver in there to keep the flexplate steady. and that's it, without even touching the crossmember.

Well, since it's sunny today in NJ (for a change!) we'll be trying to get it all undone. Glad I dont' have to touch the crossmember.. I guess the only reason I did that for the trans swap was to get it all down, then? I never bothered to see if I could get the trans-to-engine bolts out with the crossmember up. Great!
Thanks Baz!

I did the engine and trans swap, pulling both at once. It was quite a pain in the *** , but with a little manuevering and deft engine hoist operating skills, it is very possible. It was probably easier to pull them as one unit becase i was swapping one engine w/trans for another. Just be sure if you are doing this to remove the distributor cap. The angle you need to pull the engine out at causes the cap to hit the firewall. Dont learn this the hard way.
