Some miscellaneous questions please help...

You guys have helped me a lot so I wanted to thank you all. Well anyways, I wanted to get a bigger engine in my 92 RS 6 cyl. I was thinking about the 305 or the 350. But what I wanted to know was, what all would I have to buy to switch the engines? Could anyone like give me a list or something? Also, what is the difference between TBI and TPI systems? Which is the better one in terms of power? Also, would I have to change my T-5 transmission for the bigger engine? If so, what manual transmission would you guys recommend? Oh one more thing, Which transmission is faster automatic or manual? Thanks if anyone can help me.

OK, here we go.

You need a different tranny because the V8s have a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the V6s- but since you have a manual now, then i think you can just get a bellhousing for a small block that replaces the V6 one on your existing tranny.
A manual will be the quicker than a auto considering the gearing is right.
In stock form the TPI makes more power than TBI- so if you are going through the trouble of doing a swap, go with TPI.
I did a 2.8 V6 to a TPI 305 in my 88, here is a list of stuff i remember:
-First of all, you need the harness and computer to the engine you are puting in. Get all of it that you can, even the in dash part- i had to swap my dash harness to match with the engine harness. You may not need to but incase you do, its good to have one.
-Get all sensors for a V8. The MAF is different as well a TPS and others...
-Motor mounts need to be moved on the engine crossmember(there are 2 sets of holes- the V6 uses the ones in front i think), so switch those. The brake line going under the engine to the passenger side will need to be modified or replaced by one from a V8 car- as now the motor mount is in the way of the brake line.
-a new fuel pump is not a must, but is a good idea.(I used the V6 pump for a while with no problems)
-you need a y pipe from a V8 car. you can attach it to existing exhaust at the cat, but better off replacing with a better flowing system, especially if going with TPI.
-I switched from the one fan setup to the dual so the bigger engine wouldn't overheat.
-I replaced the radiator with a z28 unit- I don't know if it is any different than a six, but for safety i did it. In my car the V8 radiator was bigger.
-get a torque converter for the V8 if you go with auto. The V6 one will work i think, but i doubt if it is very strong.

This is all i can think of right now, none of this is as complicated as it may sound-its an easy swap.I did mine in a few days.

Feel free to add to the list guys!
Good luck in you swap.

It would take me all day to answer all your questions. All I can say is there is a LOT of work involved and it is very difficult if you don't have a lot of experience. I would recommend reading through the old posts in the motor swap section and lokking in the tech articles. You should find some information.
By the way, TBI is a wet system with two injectors in the throttle body. It is similar to a carb. TPI is a dry manifold setup with eight injectors, one at each intake port that sprays fuel directly on top of the valve. TPI is much more efficient and has higher power capabilities than TBI.
TPI cars are actually quite cheap these days. Before you attempt a swap, you should consider selling your car and finding one that already has a TPI. It might actually be cheaper, and it would save you a lot of headaches. Unless of course, you want the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
Good Luck.

'88 IROC TPI 355, fully balanced, 9.75:1 compression, fully ported '70 truck heads(for now), Harland Sharp Roller Rockers, Comp Cams TPI cam, fully ported '90 speed density TPI with '86 base so it fits older style heads, Crane AFPR, Flowmaster 3in. exhaust, Edelbrock TES headers, all emissions equipment is still intact, plan on burning my own chips, many more mods and parts on the way as time and money permits =(
Best E.T. with TBI 305: 16.11 @ 82mph
Haven't been to track with new motor
Won bracket races at Numidia Raceway with my '70 Nova
In memory of Dale Earnhardt, I'll miss cheering for that black #3 on raceday!!!

Oh yeah,
If you are going to spring for a new maual tranny, i would recommend the t56 that comes in the new f cars. It is plenty strong and to my knowledge, bolts in with little more than a differnt crossmember.
You may get lucky finding a used one for a decent price.
