Engine Swap
Engine Swap
I just bought a 91 rs that had a 305 in it. I plan on putting my engine out of my 1972 c-10 in it. I have put a lot of work into this engine and it has never been touched by anyone else but me and my dad, so i know its dependable. The question is what problems does anyone forsee since its an older engine with no kind of emission crap.
my 350 specs
bored .30 over
racing cam
750 edlebrock
compition cam racing ingnition
etc.
Any comments would be apppreciated thanks

The engine is basicly a remove and install but you might run into problems if you plan on useing the fuel injection and if you have a 700r4! If you have a 700r4 it might not work without a lockup harnes in the transmition.
If you plan to use the injection there might not be locations for all the sensors that need to be installed on the block, the knock sensor will not be able to be used.
If the emmision laws arent very strict in your area i would personaly use the carb setup in the camaro from the truck and run a pressure regulator and block the fuel pump off in the block. there are articals on this site that can help you you just need to go back to www.thirdgen.org and take a look.
Good Luck!

Super, not sure where you're coming from, but let me try my $.02:
The older engine will have a two-piece rear main seal crank, which uses a different flex plate. Just get an older style 153 tooth, and you'll be fine there.
The older heads did not have hardened seats or valves. With unleaded gas, they can have problems over time under heavy loads. So, if you didn't have hardened exhaust seats & valves put in, take the heads off now and get it done. If you have '75-later heads or aftermarket pieces, you're okay. You may also have stock exhaust manifold mounting issues, but if you've got headers, no problem (the truck manifolds won't clear the chassis).
The only issue mounting your injection is the center two intake bolts on each side. Elongate the holes, and it'll bolt up.
If you are keeping your original computer contols, you will have absolutely NO problems with the TH700! Don't go carb - bad move when you've already got better stuff. Get over this negative attitude about emissions - in many ways, it's forced the manufacturers to give us stuff that also produces better power, while improving efficiency.
How much more do you need to know? I assume you're upgading the exhaust, since the factory parts choked 305s, let alone 350s. If you have TBI (assume you do), get a 670 cfm TB. If TPI, port the plenum and possibly gasket match the intake & heads, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, maybe even 22 lb injectors.
By the way, what exactly is a "racing cam"?

Correction, the knock sensor will definitely work. The block in my camaro is a '69 pickup 4bolt, and I put a knock sensor in it. All you have to do is remove the plug in its place. The ONLY problem I had with the older block is the dipstick. On a late model motor, the dipstick is pass side and it enters right at the oil pan to clear the exhaust manifolds. On the older blocks like mine, it enters on the drivers side right at the rop of the block. This prevents using f-body exhaust manifolds because there is no clearence. A set of headers will solve that problem.

Oops, missed the dipstick (but I recommended headers anyway).
Ditto on the knock sensor. It screws into the water jacket drain port that's been in SBC's since 1954.

One other thing. Since your car is a 91 it will have serpentine. The problem is older style heads only had two accessory mounting holes on the front pass side. The serpentine smog pump/ac bracket requires three. I don't recommend drilling a third hole because it's in close tolerances with a water jacket. I just made a bracket that bolts to the front intake bolt. I have pictures, but I don't have a scanner.
On the drivers side you'll be alright though.
