I NEED WISDOM! 305 tbi to pre 80's 350

Hi i have a 91 rs 305 5 speed. I am supposed to get a 1969 bone stock 350 complete minus carb for free. I am in CA so im worried about the block have provisions for smog pump. Anyone? I am also worried ill fry the tranny. The engine runs but the man (my 70 year old hotrodder neughbor) said it has a bita smoke in the morning piston rings im guessing but he says it gits after warmed up. I am going to go 30 over with hyper pistons trick flow smog legel heads smog cam headers edelbrock tbi intake turbo city tbi and get a 350 tbi ecu and custom chip. Im guessing power output at around 300-350. Will my tranny handle this? is there any other things i should know? this car will see the track but not a straight one. ps its a convertable. Will i have problems with twisting the unibody frame from this amount of power? oh and power estimate is at the fly no wheels. THANKS!

Technically, the only legal 350 TBI would be from a '91-later B-body. Although, with the aftermarket parts you're planning on using, any '91-later 350 block would be acceptable.

The smog pump will mount to the older block, but if the inspector gets into the details, you'll be failed for having an older engine than your chassis. With all of the aftermarket parts you're planning on putting on, have the CARB certs readily available. He'll most likely check the block casting then, and 1) you'll be sent to the "motor change" ref, and 2) you won't be allowed to use the older block (doesn't make any sense, but that's probably what will happen).

The smoke at start-up is more than likely valve stem seals (very poor in those days). New heads would take care of that. But, the rings/cylinders weren't much better, either (I took my first driver's test in a '69 Impala with the 300 horse 350 - we had to do a valve job on it at 90k miles, and when we pulled the heads, there was a bit of a ridge at the top of the cylinders already). You'll have to check this engine, but don't be surprised if it needs to be bored.

The T5 will be fine as long as you don't shock it. You'll need a 2-piece rear main seal flywheel ('83-'85 f-body manual transmission 305 application).

Assuming you want to take your chances with the motor change process.

Oh. I appreciate your detailed reply. I was under the impression that the short blocks origin or year was inconsequential. What I have been told was if you swap the whole motor (heads cam intake exhaust computer ect) that it had to be newer and your vehicle had to have origonally been offered with that size engine. Where would i look these facts up from? Also do you think painting the engine and aluminum heads all black like stock that the smog tech wouldnt look as closely? Also when you say shock are you referring to burnouts ect? I am not a big fan but im sure with 150hp extra i might a few times. THANKS!
