Looking into Dropping my LT1 into a 3rd Gen Camaro.
Since my 4th gen. Z was totaled a few weeks ago, I have been looking into dropping my Engine and Transmission into a 3rd Gen. Camaro. I have always like the way 3rd gen. looks.
First off....would i need to get a V8 body? Would having a v6, 305, or 350 previously in the car make a difference in how hard the installation is?
Would there be any problems with hooking certin things up such as power steering, a/c, guages....etc.
What about problems with hooking up the transmission. 4L60E...any problems with it fitting...what about the driveshaft?
I will have my car to use for parts...and the engine is fine and so is the interior..Im also planning on transfering most of my interior to the car also.
Any info would be GREATLY appreciated! I usually post on CamaroZ28.com but I heard this site is better for 3rd gens. so I decided i would post over here.
Thanks,
Neal

Well it would definately be to your advantage to find a 87 or later Iroc/Z28 because then you won't have as much fabrication to do as compared to putting it in a V6 SC, when its time to put in the V8. Also when getting one of those you will have the upgraded suspension, wheels, etc, so you won't have to spend money upgrading those as much.
You will have some rewiring to do though i believe. I'm not sure about the tranny.
I'm sure there are others on this board that can give you much much better advice than I can though.

I would recommend a 91 or 92 Z28, they had better looking ground effects and a better spoiler (in my opinion). Z28's always have better suspension and brakes, etc. I am looking into this swap on my 89 RS( can't make up my mind what i want!)

V8 body would be preferable but a V6 one would work, just change springs, motor mounts, and passenger front brake line, you can get a painless wiring drop in harness for the 94-95 LT1 now with the required vats module, if you want to keep a/c you will need to modify the passenger motor mount to brace the a/c compressor, ac ps and fuel lines will need to be fabricated and the auto trans will bolt right in, im currently doing almost same thing but with a 93 engine and manual trans, good luck.

you could sell the engine and transmission to me:]i would get a v8 car so you have the right engine mounts and ac,ps brackets ect.you will have to adapt the speedometer to electronic unless you use the 4th gen dash too

Whats the difference between the brakes on a Z28 (not with 1LE, with rear drums) and any other camaro (6cyl, iroc) they were all the same (except 1LE and rear discs which wern't on all z28s or irocs either and really don't work all that much better than the drums imo)
I'm doing the same swap right now and I'm dropping an lt1 93 with AT...like they're saying you'll need to do the fuel line and the AC compressor removal.I have a question for you guys...will my rear-end support that much HP and torque???? My gears are 2.73 non-posi.

Ok A/C removal is NOT required but it makes the swap a LOT easier, either way starting with a V6 or V8 car fuel, a.c, and power steering lines will need to be fabricated, go to www.hpsalvage and look around there is info on doing the swap with a/c not the route im going but can be done, best bet would be to get a TPI Z28 dont matter 305 or 350 reason i say is then you wont have to drop the tank to change fuel pumps, your whole 4th gen int. can be made to fit it has been done, transmission will bolt to existing crossmember etc. , for pics of my 86 Z28 with 93 LT1 in it while in progress check out www.Z28speed.com

Mat I believe it would work fine but i'd recommend just getting a high flow one from jegs a 255lph one is $150 and then later when you up the power you wont have to worry about dropping the tank AGAIN.
I see ... well thanks, I'll try with the 93 one first. I'm not really planning on boosting this engine over 350 hp ...this car won't be on the track , i'll just hide until I find rustangs ...you probably know the rest !!! We all know the rest ...
