I need a low cost good motor! with lots of HP!
OK,
My budget is pretty low, but i do need a new motor. I hate being beat by ***** *** cars, my 89 camaro has 190+ thousands miles on it and is a little tired. My macanic friend suggested a 350 vortech straight from chevy for less than $1500. Hes got some headers for me and i plan to get flowies and a new cam. I am pretty set on this vortech. With the mods i plan to be around 320HP which is good enough for me. So I need some suggestions on a low cost motor and mods. I dont need major HP i just need enough to win more than half of my street races. I want more than 300. But i wouldnt complain about 350+ but it has to stay down under $3000 total. Thats a motor, cam, headers which i will get cheap from my friend and flowmaster (i want 3" headers back but i will prob just get 3" cat back which i got quoted for $380). Please help me out, nobody wants a slow camaro running the streets!

I myself have an RS with the PATHETIC 305 tbi. I have had it for about a year and a half and have thought through every option time and time again.
Everybody has their opinion... But for me, weighing out every option, and taking into account that I have almost no mechanical ability to work on cars.. I came to the conclusion that it would be impractical for me to go this route.
I too have had the misfortune of getting my *** handed to me by many V6 granny cars. It's embarassing... But hey at least my car looks better! LOL
Seriously... I want a fast car, that has FUEL INJECTION, that gets good gas mileage to boot. So my solution is to get a car that already has these features. Like a 4th gen camaro/firebird. Or hell even a late 80s 350 tpi car.
I realize that many are on a tight budget, as am I... But in reality you are going to spend almost as much, if not more trying to make your car faster. Because not only do you have the engine to worry about, but you have other things like will the tranny hold up? Is the rear end in good shape? Suspension? Then you have to consider condition of the car... Is this car worth spending thousands of dollars on???
I recommend you just sit back, and think real hard about what your plans are for the car... How long do you plan on keeping it? Then decide what you will do with your hard earned cash.

well just to be a little stinker i would be carefull i have never heard of a gm 1piece rear main 350 for under 1500$ I have connections with the dealer and its more like over 1500$ my price is usually 200$ cheaper than they sell to public so he might just be wanting to sell you something he built on the side. but hey if you get a warrenty go for it. BTW just as a little side note GM wont even take your money untill you give them your vin.

. Maybe some places are more relaxed about procedures than others.

what i meant by my previous post was to make sure you are getting a engine from gm and not a mechanic special "something he built and is selling as a gm engine" the vin is entered in the gm computer and is coverd in all 50 states for warenty.
just letting you know how to cover you butt incase the engine clunks out thats all
check out GMGOODWRENCH.com and look around over there, l think they still have a motor for sale for cheap, its a carb'd 350, l think its called the deluxe 350, puts out like 320 HP cast pistons crank, come with a manifold, carb, l think distributor and its fairly complete for little cash, also look at some of the low HP truck 350s

I think jimpaceautomotive is better. I saved just over $100 on the engine and that was enough for the upgraded intake and new wires

- Holley 670 TB unit w/ 1/2" spacer/adapter
- Edelbrock RPM vortec intake
- 350ho 330hp vortec crate motor
- 8" harm. balancer
- Stewart stage 2 water pump w/160 thermo
- SLP tri-y headers to full 3"
- Rebuilt trans w/ SLP shift kit
- Centerline 16x8's all around
- 36/24 mm sway bars
- Full poly bushings, even motor mounts
- SLP LCA and panhard
- Alston SFCs
- Edelbrock 3 point STB
- Global west steering brace aka wonderbar
- Eibach pro kit springs
- Bilstien high perf. struts and shocks
- All this and I still have AC
My advice is to sell your car and use that money plus the $3000 you are planning to spend on your engine and buy a new car. You could find a real nice and fast TPI 350 thirdgen for that money.

If you find this low cost, good motor... with lots of HP! let me know because I want some too.... Hey maybe there is a tree somewhere that they grow on!
Until you find this magical engine tree, I will continue with project 355.
