305 TBI swap into a 92 RS 3.1 V-6 HELP!!!

I currently own a 92 RS with the 3.1 V-6, unfortunately the six banger has 160,000 miles on it and after numerous modifications and being ran hard, the motor has failed me, the engine is worn and will not last much longer. I just bought a 1988 Camaro with the 305 TBI, it has everything, and has only 37,000 miles on it, but the car has no title and is totalled. I would like to put the 305 TBI into my 92 RS. I know that they put these engines in the 92 from the factory, but i am not sure what changes, or problems i should expect to encounter. I need help in any way possible, any tips, hints, or possible problems. I would like to know if the tranny in my 92 will hook up to the 305, if the fuel pump will work out of my V-6, and how difficult of a job this swap will be. Please help out this Camaro guy, this is all new to me, thanx

I'am in the process of swapping my 91 RS V6 for a V8. I have the engine and tranny in, and now am working on wiring and brackets. Since this is my first swap I would say it has be very hard at times. I was foolish for not using a donor car but have managed to get what I need. The project has been very time consuming, so I hope you have time on your hands. To respond to the question regarding your 92 tranny, No the 92 V6 transmission will not bolt up to the 305 the bell housing is different from the V8 model. I would suggest using the 700R4 out of the 1988 camaro. Also take in too consideration that the 92 speedometer is electrical and the 1988 is cable driven. I hope this helps!

You're going about it the right way, although it might have been better to use the same or later year. But...

The speedo drive is no problem. Just remove the cable drive from the '88 and put in the electronic sensor from the '92.

The fuel pump for the V6 operated at a higher pressure than the TBI needs. An AFPR will solve that problem.

Be prepared to change over everything that's different between the V8 can and the V6 car, like radiator, front springs, front brake line, tach, sway bar, radiator, full engine harness, ECM, full exhaust, etc., etc., etc. But, like I said, you're going about it the right way.

You may want to look in the Technical Articles
of this site under Engines, V6 swap to V8 for more information on swapping. However five7kid
covered most of the major changes for the swap. Motor mounts will also have to be changed out. the V8 motor mounts go where the three holes are farther forward on the frame of the V6.
