Why a 307? They have a pathetic bore/stroke ratio. Plus they are not very common so parts would be expensive. If you are going to the trouble of swapping in a new motor, you should go ahead and step up to a 350, or a 383. Hell maybe even a 406!
More displacement always gives you an advantage to begin with.

Why not a 307? Unless you are going to be racing, why do you need a 350, or 383? If you can get a cheap 307, then go for it. You will have more power than you did before, but not as much as a 350. Your gas milage will be better than the 350 though. It all depends what you want to do with the car.
I think it's a good idea especially if you can get it for cheap and you don't want to really build it up. A 307 has more power potential than a 305 because it has a larger bore/shorter stroke.

Is this 50k miles since rebuild or since new? What is this 307 coming out of?
I ask because SBC 307's were made from '68 to '73 or so (meaning 50k factory miles isn't likely), and Oldsmobile 307's were made in the '80s. You don't want an Oldsmobile 307.
If it is a SBC 307, it can be made to look like an '87 305 and pass visual inspection. However, it will have to have computer controls, either CC carb or fuel injection.
