Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

I've looked for this before and havent found anyone. I think the hard part is that its a talldeck, the throttle body points up a wierd angle where no one has room and that the oil pan isnt the same as other BBC so you have to modify the stocker. I think you are or will be the first in a thirdgen.

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

i have the engine sitting in my car and yes the front part of the oil pan hits the k member, but uses regualar engine mounts...and the rear sump sits 2 inches off the ground, as for the throttle body that can easy be fixed by making a fabbed up plate with a 90 degree elbow...im stationed in south carolina and my car/garage/house is in maryland so i only get to work on it about once every two months...looking to run a manual steering box from an s10 as well...

Only experience I have with one is it was the engine in the 30' motor coach that towed the '57 on an open 16' trailer from the Denver area to Pomona for the 2004 NHRA Finals. We kept up with empty 18 wheelers over the passes, averaged about 7 mpg for the trip.

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

Its not a tall deck block - its the same as a 454. It is a Mk VI block though, which is an improved design over the MK IV and V. Better lube system, and a steel crank, and roller cam provisions.

I thought I remember hearing they can use traditional BBC heads, but just requires a special head gasket.

Someone near me has two for sale at 1200 each. Sounded like a good deal but I heard you can't do to much to them?

For what its worth, the Mk VI block is what GMPP uses for its crate engines. Must have at least some aftermarket...?

Not the same block as a 454. It is a taller deck and is even a different setup from the typical tall deck BBC. This is the engine most widely used in the marine industry today. Not too many people making hot rod stuff for the 496. Raylar Engines probably has the most stuff for them.

You can stroke and bore a 454 to a 496, but the factory 496 8.1L engine is not based on the 454 Gen VI block.

I'd love to pick one up but I can't do any custom work so I'll probably end up going sbc

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

i have two 8.1, in my wifes 05 2500 avalanche and my 02 2500 truck with a 6 speed.both have a preadator tunes on them and i would love to put one in my 89 camaro but i already have a 454 i am working on for it. the 8.1 has great torque and real fun with a stick. the raylar heads are the way to go i think plus they are aluminum, also they have a few cams to pick from. i am looking for a intake i can use a carb....future project!!?!?!

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

interesting. I found a complete engine recently, but decided against it due to the lack of aftermarket. Those Raylar heads are badass, and yes they are aluminum, but they are $$$$. In the end, it makes more sense to me to use a single RMS 454 block. I actually decided to keep with the LT1 I have because I wanted to retain my stock accesory drive, and didnt want to add the weight.

I would love to see how they fit in a f-body though

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

I have some expience with these engines in boats, they are limited to what the block will handle. 700 hp is really the limit, most people are going back to the older style big blocks plus everything is very expensive for these engines. I would stay away from them. just my op.

Re: 8100 Vortec 496 anyone?

Also, they changed the head-bolt pattern. Old heads won't work.
