Vacuum advance HEI? what years to use?
hey,
I'm wondering which year of hei I can use to match my non cc carb. Will one work as long as it's a vacuum advance one? or do I need to make sure it came from a non cc car or truck? the reason I ask is because I see them on ebay with the vacuum advance but they are from vehicles that were produced after '82 which is somwhere around when I figure all the vehicles would have computers
little help?
thanks

Your best bet it mid 70's. Most distributor from trucks into the mid 80's "carbed" would work also. The only catch is some trucks would have a vac advance and electronic spark controll on the distributor "which can be disabled by unplugging" but some had the same comp BS that is on our cars.
Kinda confusing unless you know what to look for. It would probably be best to buy a new accel performance distributor 120$
Confusingly

You need to make sure it came from a non-CC vehicle. I can vouch for the vacuum/mechanical advance WITH computer, have it on my '84 van.
The new unit is a good idea. The stock module dies at 4500 rpm, the coil isn't anything to write home about, an adjustable vacuum can is a nice thing to have - get a new Accel or Pertronix unit.
