anoter LT1 question that has probably already been answered.

like the title says, im considering an lt1. i can get one out of a 79 camaro for real cheap. the guy says its a bone stock 92 corvette lt1.

heres my delema. im pretty sure the clutch and tranny have 170,000 miles on them (as does the 305) now on the LG4 the clutch and tranny seem strong and work great. only i hear that an lt1 will rip the T5 to shreads. i really dont want to replace all that crap. can i just drive it politely? id have to spin the tires every now and then but just drive it mildly would be ok right?

Dude thats like having a 500hp engine and use 2 inch wide rear tires. What would be the point of 300hp on a tranny that can't stand 250. The reason you want LT1 is more power right? So why would you want that power if you're not gonna use it? If you want stick shift save up for a used T-56 if not get your stuff converted to an auto tranny and get a used 700r4.

GM knows that the T5 wont hold up to an L98 which has 50hp less than the LT1 so why try. I dont know if theres anything that can be done to beef up the T5, if there is and you wanna keep it go ahead if not T-56 is the way to go.

Since you don't have a world class trans, you would have to never beat it and never ever ever powershift it. It will last some time but if you get stranded...

I don't think the HP is as hard on driveline parts as many people think. Torque is what F's things up and the TPI's have too much of it IMO. Not that torque is a bad thing when you could put it to the pavement, but imagine a 4 year old girl twisting your wrist as quick as the light of day... Thats the LT1.

Now imagine Arnold Shwartznegger slowly twisting your wrist....

Which would you fear? (Although arnold is looking like a 4yr old these days..)

actually i might be getting it because the 305 has 170,000 miles on it and its starting to show. with intake backfires being as common as they are, a $500 LT1 is looking pretty good. its MPI has been replaced with carb and it hasnt a computer controlled object on it so i kinda like that. so im actually getting it as a replacemet engine, the power boost is just a major bonus.

Well dont pass up the deal on that engine man, the tranny isnt cheap but it wont cost you an arm and a leg. I've seen it for $750 used, used is definitely the way to go.

Hey,
Watch out! I think the guy is feeding you a bunch of crap. If he says the LT1 was out of a '92 Corvette, make him prove it. IT may be the old LT1 out of the early 70's Camaro, which wasn't a bad engine at all, just not what you think you are buying. Make him show you the old intake to prove it. SOunds like you're getting hosed.

lol i already know about all that, and lets be serious, and old LT-1 is still worth $500 isnt it? yea, i know to check the VIN and my dad and i are gonna go do a compression test on sun. his valve guides are bad (they arent nearly as bad as mine) and we want to check the comp, to know if redoing the heads will blow out the bottom end. oh and he is getting the heads done so i dont have to worry about it.

i dont think he is feeding me crap because he just got his 600+ hp drag engine for a little over $2,000. and its another LT1. as you can tell hes got a few hookups.
