Carbed 305 to a 350
Carbed 305 to a 350
Hey guys. Ive had this camaro for about 6 mos now, and Its got a carbed stock 305 in it. Now, this summer, once I have some extra cash flowing again, Id like to swap in a 350. But Im not exactly sure on what needs to be changed in order for me to get the proper performance I desire out of the new motor. Ive talked to a couple of local people, but everybody up here has no idea what they are talking about, So I thought Id turn to the pros. Any information that you guys can provide me with would be absolutly wonderful. Thanks.
Well, the swap is a direct bolt up deal. Both the small block 305 and the small block 350 are bolt for bolt exactly the same. While the engine's out, I'd go for a new set of headers, as they're much easier to change with the engine out. Other than that, just unbolt your old engine, take off the necessary accessories, etc. and bolt the new engine and old accessories back in, very straightforward. Depending on how much power you're looking for with the new engine, you may want to fortify the rest of your drivetrain, but if it's just a mild 350 you should be fine. The rest of the upgrades can be done just as easily with the new engine in the car for the most part.
Have fun.

You're probably going to get very different opinions on whether or not to keep the computer in the car. I would recommend ditching it. I have a 350 in place of the LG4, and have had many problems, a few being the LG4's stock timing is 22* (not nearly enough), the carb is jetted for the 305, and the bigger cam is giving the computer fits. Maybe with a new PROM and a lot of work to the CC Q-jet, you could get it to work, but then you still can't tune it yourself. I'm gonna replace all that stuff when $$$ permits.

If you have to pass even a visual underhood inspection you wont pass unless you rig up dummy air tubes, wires, and use the stock air cleaner.I am stuck with the same problem.I dont have to pass a sniffer test but do fail the underhood visual every year and I still run the c/c carb and distributor. If you dont have picky inspectors or no sniffer test then take this stuff out.
