87 GN 3.8 into 89 GTA?

ok, i'm fairly new at 3rd gens so bear with me. i just picked up an 87 GN motor w/o turbos cheap, and i've found a GTA in fairly good condition, but without motor/trans. any advice for putting it in? the tubings going to be all custom, and i was told the engines alot taller than the TTA's. i don' mind doin alotta body work, and was hoping to mate it to a manual tranny. anyone done this before?

It would work better with an auto.

That aside, you either have to lose your AC box or lose the heads. And theres only one turbo you are missing... I sure hope you have all the other stuff.

I will look tonight when i get home in an old Car Craft i have. There is a gentleman in New Jersey i believe his name is Steve Kaminski. He does these swaps and had was recommended by Car Craft and i have also seen two cars in GM high tech performance. I will see if i can dig up his number for you. He should eb able to answer your questions i too have thought aout this swap. I know the heads don't clear they use heads off of a front drive car not sure but i think it was because of the ac. I'll let you know tonight.

There is a FAQ About this swamp..

The A/C will have to go if you want to use the GN Heads, you will have to fab up your own Downpipe as a GN one wont work with GN headers and an F-body.

Don't use a Manual Tranny. Waste of Time. Find the correct 2004R use that instead. You are going to need Motor mounts that are discontined, the Tranny Crossmember is TTA specific so you'll have to make one...

Bla bla bla..

I think that u will need different heads because the original GN 3.8 rear wheel drive heads dont fit the chasis right. I think the f-bodies uses the front wheel drive 3.8 heads. I had read that in a article a while ago. The article had something to do with the history of our third gen cars. the article might even be on this board!

Like I just said, The Heads fit fine. The problem is if you want to use A/C or not. There are many F-bodies running around with GN motors with GN heads just no A/C.

if you dont plan on boosting it skyhigh you could change the heads it will raise the compression to 9 to 1 still okay if you run 94 octane and keep the boost stock also look for an adapter plate to mount the 700 to the 3.8 i've heard guys running quicker with the 700 than the 200 plus the crossmember wont have to be changed

sounds like you got a plane jane 3.8 buick motor, most likely the turbo's would not have been separated from the motor if it was a real GN motor.

just my thoughts....

I don't see why you can't use a 5 speed there are a million stealths on the road wiht turbo 5 speeds..
Personally I would leave the air conditiong and just use a set of heads off a front wheel drive 3800 engine like a TTA
