Crate Engine Swap -- A few simple questions
Crate Engine Swap -- A few simple questions
Ok I'm in the middle of swapping a carbed race motor into my IROC which was previously fuel injected. I have a few simple questions.
First, I'm not removing the computer so I was wondering if the torque converter is still going to lock up if its plugged in?
Second, the distributor. Since it is a non computer controlled distributor what wires do i use to plug into the HEI setup? Will the tach still work?
Third, the fuel pump. I don't really have the money for a 3 port fuel pressure regulator and i have a mechanical pump mounted on the engine already. Can I leave the electric fuel pump in the tank not running and just pump gas right through it? Or do i have to lower the tank.
And lastly, the sensors. The only sensors I really want to work are the ones in my dash. I think the engine has the temp sensor on teh drivers side that will work. But it definately doesn't have the oil pressure sender. It has a bung for it but there is nothing in it, i'd imagine it is cast with the threads but closed. Can i drill into that? Or is the pressure sending unit supposed to go somewhere else on these blocks? Its a right side dipstick 350/350 HO SBC Crate Motor.
Thanks for all your help.

Hey, first, yes you can leave the fuel pump in the tank fuel will flow through it just fine turned off. Second, all, the fitting for sensors are goin to be on the intake oil/water temp. Dont know to much about the converter, the hei and tach will work fine as long as you have a v8 in now, just use the power wires and tuck the rest awau or cut them off, :: suggestion:: since your not using any of the compuyer controlled stuff, when you have the engine out rip it all out! it will actually save you about 100 pounds and makes it look cleaner.

The TCC will not lock via the computer any longer, as you are eliminating an info source for it. You need to get a lockup kit from TCI, Jegs, Summit, etc., or hook up a manual switch you flip inside.
The tach will work with the tach wire from your old distributor, but the connector may be different - I'm not sure about that. The mechanical/vacuum advance HEI only needs the ignition power wire to work, and the tach wire for the tach to work.
Taking out all the computer stuff saving you 100 lbs? Right. I'll grant you 5 lbs.
