LS1 swap
LS1 swap
ok heres the deal:
i plan on getting into SCCA racing next year, so i need to start planning on a vehicle to race in....
I either want a L98 equipped third gen or
buy a cheap 82-84 base model camaro and drop an LS1 in there.
would there be much of a weight savings in having the LS1-SC over ...maybe an IROC L98?
also, in a local newspaper, a COMPLETE 99 corvette drivetrain is for sale for $5000 with 28k miles on it, this is a really good deal isnt it???

Better check the SCCA rules before you start making too many plans. An LS-1 engine swap would place you in a category in which you simiply can't compete. There are rules to what you may or may not change on your car in order to qualify for various racing classes. First, go through the list of classes at the SCCA site and figure out where you stand. Then figure out what you can do before you're unable to compete with the other people in the class you fall in to. That will answer your question as to what you want to do with your car.

Actually, the LS1 swap might qualify under the update/backdate rule. Meaning you can swap parts betwen differeant year models as long as they are listed on the same line in the different classes. And yes, the new LS1 Z's are listed right along with the 3rd gens so I would think it would be an allowed update. You could always write the SCCa Board for clarification on this. I'll check with our local Tech inspector guy and see what he thinks. He's the guy you'd have to get through to race in our area anyways so surely he'd know.
