Hey everyone, I need to replace my 91 305 TBI/4spd Auto. I want a 350, can I get one from any 91 GM truck and will it work? What will the yard let you take with the engine, TBI, Prom, all the accesories, etc? Shouldn't everything be ok emission-wise. Also how much should I expect pay for it and what are they rated at for HP.

If you jump over to the TBI board someone over there swapped a vortec 350 out of a 96-98 chevy truck. He had to use a vortec intake and TBI adapter. Do a name search on badbrd383 I think. I believe this put him in the low 14s running the stock 305 chip. Vortec motors in my area are going for about a grand depending on the miles. Check it out, might be one way to go.

Most junk yards in Ohio I have been to will sell the complete engine. That is wiring, computer, and accessories. I didnt buy a truck motor, but I got an LT1 and only paid 950 for it with anything i wanted off the car that needed to go with the motor. I would imagine that since the truck you are getting the motor out of was emissions legal your car should be.

Dont think that I have been there but I got my LT1 from a 93 Z28 at a junk yard in Dover OH called Wayne-Hayes on Rt 516.

Emissions would only be a problem if your state required a visual inspection. Then if you have a motor that never came on your car, unless the attendant is a moron, you wont pass. Here is how emissions goes in my county in ohio:

1. visual check for a cat. as long as there is something resembling a cat (ie, gutted w/ a pipe through it) it will pass.
2. sniffer test. the general test where they run your car at a certain speed and check for co, hc, etc.

2 loopholes:
- if your car is manufactured more than 25 years ago, it doesnt need any emissions.
- if you spend 300 (or 500 cant remember) bucks on getting the car emissions legal it gets an automatic pass. the trick there: get a friend that works at an auto shop to print up some bogus reciepts and use those.

It may be similar or completely different elsewhere, i'm not certain.

Get a 350 engine from a car if you can, the ones in cars have a roller cam. The trucks all use flat-tappet cams.
