2.8 MFPI TO 305 TPI
2.8 MFPI TO 305 TPI
I NEED SOME REALLY GOOD ADVISE. I'M CHANGING A 2.8 OVER TO A 305 TPI. I FOUND A 1986 305, TPI FOR $300 SO I BOUGHT IT AND AM PLANNING ON REBUILDING IT. NOW I NEED TO KNOW:
1. CAN I USE MY 2.8 SERPINTINE BRACKETS AND ACCESSORIES, DISTRIBUTOR, OR ECM (WITHOUT THE PROM) ON IT?
2. CAN I USE CORVETTE ALUMINUM HEADS, IF SO FROM WHAT YEARS?
3. BESIDES THE ROLLER CAM WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE 1987 305 AND THE 1986?
4. FOR A MOSTLY STREET DRIVEN PERFORMANCE CAM I WAS THINKING A ROLLER CAM WITH 214/222 DURATION @.50, .488/.509 LIFT WITH 112 DEGREE LOBE SEP, ANY THOUGHTS?
5. CAN I GET A PROM BURNED FOR THIS CAM SO I CAN DRIVE THE CAR IN THE STREET AND ANOTHER PROM SO THAT I CAN HAVE IT SMOGGED EVERY 2 YEARS (IN CALIFORNIA)?
6. IF SO, WHO DOES THIS TYPE OF THING AND FOR HOW MUCH?
7. WILL ENGINE COMPRESSION EFFECT SMOGABILITY TOO?
8. SHOULD I GIVE THIS WHOLE IDEA UP AND BY A HONDA?
9. WILL I LOOSE ALL, OR PART OF MY HAIR BEFORE THIS MESS IS OVER?
ANY INFORMATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hey man,
Well i did a 2.8 liter swap but mine was to a 355 blown s/b
little bit more power, but yes the serpintine belts are the same however you may need a bigger one, brackets should all match up. But the 2.8 liter remember is much smaller my sugestion would be to go to the junk yard and get brackets off a 305. The cam seems reasonable, the computer i have no idea im not the old fashon carbs set up
Allum heads from a corvette may work but why would you use them anyway? go with after market, i run canfields and wouldnt recomend anything else.As for engine compression, unless your changing the pistons i wouldnt worry youll prob be between 9/1 and 10/1 and remember smog tests test how CLEAN your engine is running whether your engine is burning all the fuel and how efficiently its burning that fuel, i past easily with my blown 355.
Lata.
