350 from a '68 Firebird
350 from a '68 Firebird
Hey Guys...
My LG4 in my 84 Z28 has to go and I want to put in a 350. My cousin has a '68 bird with a 350 which he's swapping out and will sell to me cheap with a th350 trans. This is the low output 350 (factory rated 265hp) and is in good running order.
I know that the early pontiac blocks are different than a SBC but will it fit in alright and do I have to change mounts ect? Will replacement/aftermarket parts have to be Pontiac specific or do they share some common parts with Chevy?
What I'm really trying to ask is this a good idea or would it be better to hold out for a Chev 350?
Thanks

If you're looking to do this on the cheap, forget it.
You'll need motor mounts and headers at a minimum, in addition to changing the wiring for the driver's side starter.
You may require a different crossmember for the TH350, but I don't recall off the top of my head.
Replacement parts are wholly Pontiac, as the only thing the two motors might share in common is a few miscellaneous bolts. If you want to keep your computer control you'll need to acquire a CCC Pontiac distributor (not too commmon) as well.
The TH350 shares all its internals with Chevy TH350s, but the case itself is different for the BOPC bolt pattern.
My advice: Skip it unless you're going for the "neat" factor.

Yeah, that's what I thought - he said it wouldn't be too much of a hassle but he has stretched the truth before to benefit his situation... ie. money in his pocket!
I'm just going to hold out for a Chev 350. When did that new bolt pattern for starters start? I have the BW T5 so I'd like to get a block that won't give me grief. The bolt pattern is inline instead of offset?

its not all that hard, just a frame mount swap and a trans adapter plate and you can use that and the engine will fit right in with your current trans, every part made for a SBC is also made for the pontiacs, i personally like seeing something unique under the hoods of cars, insted of the, **yawn** 350 chevy under everyones hood seeing a REAL pontiac engine in a 3rd gen is allways a nice site
