Engine Prices

Sorry, I didn't quite know where to put this cause it doesn't deal with aftermarket. Anyways, I went to my local Camaro & Firebird salvage to check out some stuff. I'll be starting My 383 build in March so I went to check out the engines. The guy there said he would sell me an L98 block with the crankshaft and pistons for $125. I forget if he said it comes with heads. So, is this a good price, I couldn't check them out because you have to know what you want to look around and I wasn't looking to buy that day.

Just a note: before you even leave the junk yard look to make sure the casting is centered. Look at the lifter and cam bores make sure they are centered in the boses.
before you waste money on crack testing. You may want to have a list with block part numbers that fit your engine project too reference while your looking around. Hope this helps. Oh one other thing the pistons and crank are worthless for a stroker 383.

go to either www.holley.com or bust out one of your jegs catalogs and look for the holley system max 2 system it puts out 425hp and same torque..if you dont believe me check out their dyno graph on the holley website

here is what it comes with

SysteMAX II Contents
Hydraulic Camshaft and Lifters
Aluminum Dual Plane Intake Manifold
Double Roller Timing Chain and Gears
Fully Assembled Aluminum Cylinder Heads
Hardened Push Rods
ARP Cylinder Head Bolts
Assembly Lube

Camshaft
MAXimum Performance
Intake Valve Lift/Duration: .473"/290° @ .006"
Exhaust Valve Lift/Duration: .488"/297° @ .006"
Valve Overlap: 73.5° @ .006"
Rocker Arm Ratio: 1.5
Intake Lobe Centerline: 105°
Exhaust Lobe Centerline: 115°
50-State Legal (E.O. #D-115-10)
Intake Valve Lift/Duration: .454"/265° @ .006"
Exhaust Valve Lift/Duration: .480"/278° @ .006"
Valve Overlap: 47.5° @ .006"
Rocker Arm Ratio: 1.5
Intake Lobe Centerline: 107°
Exhaust Lobe Centerline: 117°

The SysteMAX II camshafts for the small block Chevrolet V-8 are a radical departure from your normal, run-of-the-mill camshaft. Looking at the specifications is enough of an eye opener to indicate that these really do live in the fast lane.

Lifters
The MAXimum Performance kit comes with flat tappet, quick bleed hydraulic lifters. The 50 State Legal kit comes with standard flat tappet hydraulic lifters. Both are designed to work fast and live with the higher stresses of a high performance engine.

Push Rods
The push rods included with the SysteMAX II kit are 8.040" length and specially hardened to withstand severe usage.

Intake Manifold
An aluminum, dual plane, high-rise design configured to make excellent power from just off-idle to 6500 RPM, the rev limit of the SysteMAX II package. The runner cross-section is large and smooth-flowing to allow an unobstructed flow of the air/fuel mixture from the carburetor to the intake valves. Special care was taken to ensure that the manifold's flow characteristics closely matched that of the SysteMAX II package to provide maximum performance. The MAXimum Performance kit manifold has no EGR provision. The 50 State Legal kit manifold (E.O. #D-115-9) does have EGR provision. Both manifolds have a square carburetor mounting flange.

Heads (E.O. #D-115-8)
Made of lightweight 356-T6 heat-treated aluminum, these Holley heads weigh only 30 lbs. each. They're light and full of performance features:
Rectangular-shaped exhaust ports in stock O.E. locations.
Intake and exhaust valve angles changed from 23° to 20°.
Combustion chamber volume: 66 cc.
Intake runner volume: 185 cc, flowing 228 SCFM @ .500" valve lift.
Exhaust runner volume: 68 cc, flowing 162 SCFM @ .500" valve lift.
Rocker arm ratio: 1.5:1
Valves: One-piece forged from 21-4N stainless steel with stellite tip and chrome-plated stem.
......Intake - 2.02" diameter
........................4.92" length
........................11/32" stem diameter
......Exhaust - 1.60" diameter
........................4.94" length
........................11/32" stem diameter
Valve Springs: Dual, with dampener
......Diameter - 1.430"
......Seat Pressure - 132 lbs.
......Open Force - 310 lbs. @ .500" lift
Valve Seat Angle:
......Top - 35
......Middle - 45
......Bottom - 60
Valve guides are made of phosphorous/bronze.
Valve Keepers: 7°, steel.
Straight spark plug design.
Spark plug type: Champion C61C
........................14mm, 3/4" reach,
.........................040" gap or equivalent
Heat cross-over passage has been retained.
ARP head bolts with hardened washers are included.

Timing Chain and Gears
The double roller timing chain and gears provide for more consistently precise timing and, therefore, power.

SysteMAX II Requirements
......Chevrolet 350 CID short block
........................4-bolt Mains
........................Zero-Decked
........................10.0:1 Compression Ratio
........................Forged Steel Crankshaft
........................Lunati Rods, P/N LAH1
........................Lunati Flat Top Pistons, P/N 13H1J250
........................Speed Pro Rings, File Fit

Holley testing was conducted with a 750 CFM vacuum secondary carburetor, P/N 0-3310. A good set of 1-5/8" tube headers, used in conjunction with some high-flow/low-back-pressure mufflers is definitely recommended. If you're running a beefed-up TH-350 automatic transmission then a 3,000+ RPM stall converter will help lower drag strip times. If you're running a TH-700R4 automatic transmission, a 2,500+ RPM stall converter will perform best. For all-around great street/strip performance a rear axle ratio of around 3.55 should be used. A set of Lunati, P/N 84146, roller rocker arms is also recommended. New, top quality gaskets for your specific application are required separately and are not part of the package.

good luck!

Thanks, but I was planning on building it myself. I don't have the money for a crate motor. And I think it would just feel better saying I did it myself. Also, could I possibly sell the old crank and pistons if they come w/ the engine?

if your replying to my post then i must add that this isnt a crate motor
it is a pre selected arrangement of parts
like heads,intake,came,etc.....

so u can still build up your motor....thats what i plan on doing

Sorry, I didn't realize that. But also, how much is all of that. I'm working on a limited budget.
