Quick starter motor question
Quick starter motor question
I swapped out the 305 for a 350 in my '86 bird, took lots of photos for reference, but don't have one for the starter motor. I have put a 3510 starter into the engine, it has 3 terminals : S, R and the big center one. The wiring harness got labeled during disassembly, but I don't seem to have an exact match.
There are 4 wires. 2 of the wires are connected together to a single lug that is large enough for the big center bolt. Each of these wires has what appears to be a 16 Amp fusable link, making me certain that it goes to the large battery bolt. There's another red (maybe orange) wire with a 20A fusable link and also a large lug - I figure that goes to the battery connector too. This leaves one smaller, purple wire, with a smaller lug that could go onto either the S or R post - I just don't know which one.
Any help? If I connect the purple wire to either the S or R, that will leave the other lug without a connection. Is that ok?
thanks

I'm pretty sure you connect it to the S terminal as that is for the starter switch. The R is for old points style systems. Of course this is all "If I recall correctly"

That is correct. The R terminal isn't used.

"R" stands for "resistor". Back in the old days (pre-'75), with the old points distributors, there was a resister in the ignition circuit to drop the voltage down to 6 volts to reduce points wear. However, to make it start easier, they used the solenoid to provide 12 volts to the coil while cranking. That's what the "R" terminal is for.
Many aftermarket suppliers will make one solenoid to cover many applications. So, like they said, ignore it.
